Alternator belt really loud?

Hey,

My alternator belt has been slipping badly, screeching real loud and stinking of burnt rubber... I ended up replacing it today, and it doesn't seem to be slipping any more, but instead there's a really loud whirring noise coming from the engine bay, anywhere over 2k revs. It's like a massive fan noise. Anyone know what this is?

Thanks

Check the bearings on the alternator, water pump, and related driven accessories.

Hmm ok... I'm replacing the alternator as it's not putting out enough amps, if the problem persists I'll check the water pump. I'm suspicious about the fan though - it almost spins freely with the engine off, and I don't think it's meant to do this...

Clutch fans are supposed to be able to free-wheel when the engine is cold. As hot air moves across the clutch assembly, it grabs and allows engine power to drive the fan.
