air pump

hi guys i just got my 1st rx7 been waiting awhile to get 1 picked up an 88 non turbo. traded 1 of my r/c trucks for it. its gonna need some tlc but nothing i cant handle the motor runs great fires right up revs up and idles perfectly there 124k on the motor but still has great compression and hasnt been over heated the kid i got it from put pace setter headers on it removed the pre cats and catback to dual apexi N1s. to me it sounds great. the only thing i need to do is give it a bath its been sitting in maine for about 4 years and its a white car so its pretty dirty. i need to rebuild the rear calipers new tires maybe a new headlight flip motor might be relay not sure yet. the only thing im nervous about is the kid disconnected the air pump and i just need to know if its gonna hurt performance if so what should i do about it?

The airpump can be removed without consequence on a cat-less S4. But a straight through exhaust system will most likely be causing the aux. intake ports to stop opening. Exhaust pressure created by restrictions like the cats actually activate 2 actuators on the lower intake manifold. Higher quality header/presilencer setups, like what Racingbeat sells, have pick up tubes to allow the actuators to tap into the exhaust. In my experience, home-made attempts to duplicate the setup don't work well. You can read up on the system here: http://mazdarx7.iougs.com/intakeair.shtml

Anyone have a picture or a diagram of what the pump looks like and were its located on a 93 FD? I just got mine and want to remove all the crap that is that for emissions. Here in IL no emissions for 95 and older car, only obdII now must have them.

As mentioned, removal of the air pump is fine if the vehicle is catless. At the same time, you will remove the ACV and install a blockoff plate. Also, you will probably need to get a dual belt alternator pulley to prevent the water pump belts from slipping.

If the car is S5, then the air pump opens the aux ports and VDI so it should not be removed.

Except that on your S5 now, your aux ports and VDI no longer work and you are down about 40 HP.

does the 5/6th port open when the car is at idle or do they open as the rpms pickup? and im not sure if the pacesetter headers have any connections for the actuators it does have the main cat still installed just no pre cats.

The ports open under load, somewhere around 3800 RPM. Some backpressure in the exhaust is needed to open them, so with your header, they probably don't work.

In my opinion Racing Beat makes the best exhausts for the FC. A good amount of their headers have the pick up tube needed to open the 5th and 6th ports. I was just thinking though. What if you have the 4 port 13b, do you still need the pick up tube in the header/presilencer since theres no 5th and 6th ports?

I agree, it is hard if not impossible to beat the RB exhausts.

No. TIIs are 4 port engines having neither aux ports nor VDI.
