NY Air intake pipe

hello - first experience as an adult with this vehicle.... and am wondering:

Is this pipe an air intake - should it have a filter on it - or should it be connected to the air pump? I can't see any other open connection , and have checked three service manuals and other engine bay pics, etc (Haynes on order!).

The exhaust system is in good shape and leak free but the emissions are REALLY strong. I'm wondering if there isn't proper air getting into the thermal reactor for additional burning off of the pollutants and if related to this here open pipe.... (or perhaps, bad air pump)

Thanks for having me.

that phallic looking pipe with flange....

this opening is facing front of vehicle

looking down from above

The exhaust odor is strong because you no longer have the thermal reactor and likely none of the original exhaust thereafter. An original exhaust will filter most of that out but with it gone, prepare to have your eyes burn if you stand behind it while its running. There's nothing you can do about that really.

thanks for confirming that-lesson learned . Didn’t do my homework prior to purchase, impulse buy. Not totally giving up yet though.

I wouldn't personally worry about the smell. The sound and the slight increase in performance is worth the burning eyes and rich smell. I have a Racing Beat exhaust system on my 80 and I love the sound and the performance it gives. I don't mind the hydrocarbon smell. It will backfire on deceleration but this is a normal characteristic on the 79 and 80. Theres no shutter valve or coasting valve so its something I live with as well.

A pic showing the stock configuration. The pipe you mention comes out of the ACV and connects into the thermal reactor bolted to the exhaust ports. That flange on the end is where the rubber coupler goes. With the thermal reactor and exhaust gone, your air pump (driven by the belt) and air control valve (ACV) really don't do anything either now. I'd be interested in purchasing them, if you wanted to remove them to declutter and save some weight.

will let you know for sure, Banzai. Thanks for the pic. Pretty obvious what’s missing ! Now to find a 79 brake booster…. But that’s a topic for another day.
