AC or no AC thoughts?

Hey everyone, so my car currently does not have any AC.
I have never had a car without AC. It gets really hot here.
Would you all say the Pray to the heavens vroom by 60
method (go 60 mph have windows down and pray to the
heavens it doesn't rain) is the best way to stay cool?
Or some sweet 20th century (1993) AC is the way to go?

Mine is off-line right now with a bad compressor but I intend to have it fixed. I'm old and like a/c occasionally, don't like to just yank stuff out instead of fixing it...and prefer to keep the resale value. Still researching but have heard of some alternatives to R12 that supposedly work with the R12 compressor and equipment. Intend to talk with a local shop known for AC work but seems nothing is without some drawback.though.

Mine needs recharging (or so I think), but as SgtBlue stated R12 is impossible to find and tricky to replace effectively.

However I do find it useful if I'm stuck in stop and go traffic, as even with both windows down and the sunroof open an Rx7 is an oven. It's easier sometimes when in the city to just keep the windows and roof closed, and activate AC and Recirculation.

I agree.

The pray 60 method is a real hit or miss. I will have to look into some original parts to throw back into it. AC is the greatest invention! It'd be a shame to not use it!

If the car is a daily, in frequent traffic you need ac in summer. If it's a weekend toy, night prowler lose it to free up space and weight.

I used to have an MX5 that used to be my daily and track car. I told myself that since it was a convertible, I really didn't need A/C, so pulled it out. That 17kg made a small (but noticeable) difference in the way the car handled and probably made an even less noticeable difference in actual lap times.

What I did notice was that every time I had to make a long highway commute, it seemed to be 40 degrees C and I had to drape a wet towel over my head just to manage it. Got to the point I really hated driving that car.

Is it a competitive tracked car where you want to knock off a few tenths of a second? Then go for it. Is it a regularly driven car? Keep it.

(All that said, one of the next items on my to-do list is to pull out the working AC system in the FD - I never learn...)
