ABS/Brake Light
ABS/Brake Light
My ABS and Brake light are both on constantly. I have read the codes but none specify for either light indicated. Does anyone have any suggestions on why they would be on? If so, how do you reset them or fix them?
well for suspension. I have Megan Racing Springs and shocks. I have drilled and slotted rotors to put on it and also new brake pads. But I was told that will solve one problem. The dealership told me my front rotors are out of limits. This is an FD and I've had for just over a year. I blew the engine back in May and it's been at a car shop since then. So, of course not any mods done after that. I really didnt add anything besides gauges. Oh, and this is my first time posting anything so if you could bear with me. thanks and I appreciate any and all help. I have a feeling I'll be coming in here a lot.

Who installed the suspension? Was the light on before the install?
The suspension was already in the car when I bought it. As for the light I believe it came on after I had for a few weeks. The brake light would sometimes come on then go off and then just stayed on. My ABS light doesnt come on unless i actually move the car.
Sounds to me you may have a air gap issue, possible sensor, or depending on where your pick-up gear is for your abs you mave have an issue due to aftermarket parts. But, that is just a basic idea. Could be a cracked ringgear ( I see that alot in Mazda Tributes.)
whenever I get my car back I'm going to change the rotors and the brake pads and hopefully that will take care of one if not both problems. While I'm changing them I will look at the sensors and the other parts you mentioned Jdrift. Thanks for taking the time to give me your input.

Just keep in mind that since the light only turns on when the car is moving, i'm thinking that something is wrong with a rotational item. If you have more questions i'd be happy to help if I can.
That is caused by a bad ABS sensor. Inexperienced people often tweak the wire to the sensor when doing suspension work. You will need to find the bad sensor and replace with a new one. Malloy Mazda (see 3rd gen FAQ) can get you one at a very nice discount but they are still pricey at $250. You can test the sensor by checking continuity. The Factory Service Manual has the procedure and range of ohms. Download it from the FAQ thread.
For the red brake light on the dash, check that the sensor on e-brake handle isn't loose.
I'm not sure about FDs but some cars with ABS have 2 stages of the ABS light. an Amber light and a Red light. If its an Amber light it means that the ABS system is inactive and your ok to drive but won't have ABS. if its Red that means there is something critically wrong with the system and the car should not be driven until its fixed.
A Bad Wheel Speed sensor could be the cause and probably is as they are usually the first thing to go in an ABS system but when you do the check look at the ABS system box and make sure you dont have any leaks or things of that nature, be sure when you check the wheel speed sensors to take sure there is no debris between the gear and the pickup, check the electrical connector for weathering or if its possibly severed and then as stated before check the continuity of the pickup and the correct airgap.
As well ABS systems run a pump test as your first driving the car in the morning and once you get above a certain speed so that could possibly be the issue is the pump has malfunctioned but not likely.
A brake light lamp could be atleast 3 things: bad brake lamp, stuck e-brake sensor or low fluid level. all should be checked.

I'm pretty sure that the E-brake isnt the problem, considering I removed the switch that causes the ground. I wasnt sure if maybe I need to bleed the brakes. I had the same problem with my truck and bleeding the brakes fixed it. But also my truck's pedal traveled all the way to the floor. My car doesn't and stops almost on a dime. Wheels will lock up though. I have skidded it plenty of times trying to come to a quick stop.
