CA ? about temp gauge

does anyone disagree in installing the after market water temp gauge sensor to the stock sensor. i understand this will eliminate the stock gauge. but other than that does anyone kno if it gives an accurate reading or should i just tap.

Good question...I've always used the sensor supplied with any aftermarket gauge I've ever bought so I wouldn't personally know. Anyone else...?

What model? FB, FC, FD?

Considering the age of these vehicles and how much automotive technology has changed, it's not a bad idea to use the sensor in the aftermarket gauge.

If it's an FD, I see two options:
1) Install an aftermarket gauge and use the sensor that comes with it (note: I used an existing tap on my water pump housing and did not need to cut into mine)
2) Linearize the stock gauge and skip having an extra gauge.

When I rebuilt the engine in my 1st gen, I retapped the stock sender location to accept an aftermarket sender. Upon telling a friend that this is the best location to get the 'ideal' temp reading, he retapped the stock location on his engine while it was still in the car. He used bearing grease on his fresh/sharp tap to catch the shavings and had no problems.

On 1st/2nd gen engines, I usually recommend drilling and tapping the land on the backside of the waterpump housing, right next to the oem #2 temp sender. Not sure if that can be done on the 3rd waterpump housings or not, never work on them.

i dont know if any of you have a apex-i power FC. if you dont you might as well kill yourself for not having one! anyway if you do you dont need a aftermarket temp gauge. just mount your commander (if you have one) up where you can see it and it will show you the water temp, or various other data (in a graph or just the digital read out). the power FC is the best tool you will ever have for you FD PERIOD.
