Question 94 FD RX7 strange idle growl at 1600 - 1800 RPM

Hello, I have an idle issue where instead of a steady pur, the motor growls. I got most of the issues ironed out (I fixed lose charge pipe and replaced the crusty map sensor line), the motor will idle around 1600-1800 RPM. The idle isnt a smooth pur, but rather a growl. Right at 0:42 you can hear it pur normal then turn to growl, then settle at 1600rpm. I don't know how to explain it. On the video from the inside it sounds like a diesel motor but when I walk around the back you will near the distinct "growl" I'm trying to describe.

Below is a link to a video of it, warm start.

You should check your sparkplugs see the condition that they are in, sometimes they just need to be replaced, if they look decent cleaning them with brake cleaner and clean off any carbon with a fine grit sandpaper and ensure the platinum is clean from all deposits as this can effect spark quality and overall combustion. This sounds similar to how my rex sounded after it had sat for almost 7 months, once i pulled the plugs and replaced them and put fresh gas in it, and let it warm up it purred like a kitten.

If this doesn't help you could have a sealing problem on one of the apex seals, this can happen if you rev the engine too high with No load Too often.. People who like to "show off" their rev at stoplights and in public areas sitting still is a good way to ruin your seals..

Showing them how it sounds while you leave them looking at tailights as they scramble to get after you is much more fulfilling.

Can you localize the sound at all...tell where it's coming from?
I couldn't tell for sure in the video, but assuming you still have the airpump in place and split air bypass system...you might want to look there for a leak, loose connection. The AP disengages around 3.8k rpm IIRC. If the sound quits about then it might point in that direction. Not certain, but could also have something to do with the elevated idle.

Thanks guys for the response. I pulled the codes and I'm getting code 16. I looked at the EGR valve and it seems to be tucked away. It has a sensor, I think this FD is Cali spec.

After looking at the motor closely, I can't figure out why it's idling so high.

I disconnected the charge piping and looked over all the hoses I could, reconnected everything and it still idles high.

Maybe the next step I should take is removing the extension manifold and check the lines underneath?

Get it idling right for a start. Read all the guides it will help you out with that. Not only is it high but its not a very smooth idle
That looked to me like it was a hot start yes?
also do you have pod air intake?
the noise sounds like the air pump is on (Idling way to high)

It ran the car for several months with it's condition still persistent. It finally got to the point where it couldn't start. It turns out that the lower intake gasket was blown out, did a number to the rotor housing. Kayla and I brought it to my buddy Justin here in Bellingham for a rebuild. We're doing the whole shebang to the motor. The Goat sent us some parts we needed to get the 13B rebuilt.

I will post pictures of the build progress when I get the chance in the AM. Thanks again to Zach!
