91 RX7 Auto Stuck in 3rd Gear... help
I drive a 91 Vert RX7 Automatic Transmission, and today I was driving to work, and I noticed that as I was putting it into drive the lights that indicate what gear you are in (on the dash) was saying I was in Neutral, even though I was in Drive.... it seems to be stuck there too, even if I'm in Park, Reverse doesn't matter. I wasn't to sure what to think when seeing that, but then I noticed that my car was running slow...
After driving to work, I started to realize that the car wasn't shifting gears at all... it was staying just in one, I pressed the HOLD button, nothing happened... and since I'm still able to accelerate (it doesn't seem to bog down anywhere) I was still able to drive to work.
I turned the car on to go to lunch, and it was still doing the same thing... but when I start up the car and I start driving it will shift to the next gear up and then stay there the whole time... So I figured, its shifting from 2nd to 3rd... then just staying there until I turn the car off, or put the car into park... Anyways I'm not sure what is wrong and what to do to fix it. Any clues as to what it might be? Also does the fact that the indicator light stays in Neutral have something to do with it as well?

My '91 was a 5 sp but my '88 was an automatic trans. Since you haven't gotten any replies yet I thought I would post suggestions in based on my experience with the '88 in case they are similar.
The '88 unit was a Jatco LN471B, IIRC. This trans had a vacuum modulator diaphragm to control the shifting, so if the '91 is electronically controlled diagnosing your unit would be totally different.
There was an electrical part on the right side just above the pan which sensed where the gear selector was. If you look in the FSM this part can be checked with volt/ohm meter checks. Also, check gear selector linkage to make sure it is adjusted properly so that the selector is in the proper gear and not between positions. Check vacuum modulator to make sure it is not leaking. As always with automatic transmissions, try a fluid and filter change before spending big money on repairs.
