89 FC NA idle issues again...lol

I know this topic has been posted like a thousand times..
I'm really a newbie into mechanical stuff, but I'm trying to learn
Here's my situation,
I bought a 89 FC NA few days ago, and seems like it has idle issues
On a cold start up, I'll have to press on the gas pedal for a bit to make it start.
After it starts, the idle is around 1500rpm and it sounds fine for like 15 secs.
Then, the rpm drops and keeps bouncing up and down, trying to maintain at 800rpm.Also, it backfires a lot.
Btw, my exhaust is leaking is the middle of the car, don't know if that will cause the rough idle.

Is there any easy method to find out the problems?
I'm trying to fix it myself if it is possible.
Any suggestions will be helpful.
Thanks guys

The TPS is likely out of adjustment. The sensor has a Green/Red wire which needs to be 1 volt w/key to on and engine warmed up. To properly warm the engine it needs to be driven for about 20 minutes or so. There is an adjustment screw, one inch in length, encased in a spring located on the throttle linkage that rests upon the TPS. Use this to adjust the voltage to 1 volt. Using the advanced search feature will help you find thread after thread related to the TPS and everything you need to know to adust it.
