88 Turbo II Running/Boost Issue

Hello I just recently picked up an 88 Turbo II with 82k on it and bone stock. I've put about 2-3k on it without any issue. The other day we drove the car into my garage to do a few things. The car had no issues at the time. We later pulled the AFM to look at something and saw the wires were just barely touching the correct leads inside. We re installed and tried to start the car, the car would not start. The wires may have crossed. We headed to Autozone to pick up a re manufactured AFM. We installed it and the car started up fine. When we went to rev it up though it cut out and died. The car will die out before it ever reaches boost. This happens no matter what we tried. We returned the AFM and got a replacement still with no luck. I checked around the car and found a fuel line with a hole, replaced it and still no luck. I also went ahead and did plugs and wires as well as all the fluids still no luck. I looked at the ecu and opened it up and noticed resistor 941 had a slight burn. I plugged in a spare confirmed working N333 ECU with still no luck. After returning the second Autozone AFM I ordered a used genuine Mazda AFM and a Corksport turbo inlet pipe since the stock unit was cracked. I'm not feeling lucky about this working though. Is there anything else I can look into while I'm waiting for these new parts to arrive. If it still doesn't work after these parts are installed what else can I try? Thank you!

I'm trying to figure out how you pulled the Afm and saw wires Inside?
You just disconnect the AFM from the harness Connector,..done.AFM off.
What did you do?
Check some fuses too.LIKE EGI(engine bay) and the fuel fuse (in car)

The AFM was clearly tampered with before. It was rigged together when I pulled it out and the connector had been exposed. The EGI fuse in the engine is fine, I used that to deflood the engine. I will check the fuel fuse in the car today.

When you put the car in the garage what exactly did you do? You said you noticed the afm wires barely had connections what lead to you taking those parts bad. I mean sounds like you took something apart prior to the problems you're having.

And how much did you spend on the Mazda AFM? You should diagnose the problem before you go laying out a bunch of dough.

When you drove the car into the garage to work on it was the engine cold before you started the car before driving it into the garage, and if so, how long did the engine run before turning it off?

OK all fuses are good I just checked. The car had been driving for about 30 minutes before coming into my garage. We replaced the battery and removed and eBay BOV with the stock BPV. We drove it after that with no issues. We were also looking into the reason why after its turned off it doesn't start up again easily. That lead me over to the AFM which I saw was all taken apart. I was able to get the genuine Mazda AFM for $50 so no big deal there. A lot cheaper then the $200 autozone wanted for the reman.

When you say you ordered a genuine Mazda AFM that was an eye catcher since a new one cost $1,000!

You should check for vacuum leaks and double check the valve which you replaced. Also, test the Brown/White wire at the Boost Sensor for 5 volts w/key to on. If you get a very low reding then the engine won't start. You could jumper the fuel check connetor and try to start the car w/o the AFM connected. If it starts up don't run the engine too long because w/o the AFM the engine will really run rich and likely heat up the exhaust manifold till it glows. And have you tried using 1 to 2 seconds of starter fluid shot into the intake duct and see if the car starts. It should at least start up briefly and if it does then you at least know you're getting spark. Doing this would help deflood the engine if in fact that is your main problem.

The car isn't flooded, I can start the car and keep it running. The problem is it dies out as soon as the turbo should begin to spool. By the way I never said the Mazda AFM was new. I ordered a tested used unit.

Problem solved. Genuine Mazda AFM fixed the issue. Runs perfectly now. I also installed a corksport turbo inlet and a cone filter kit while I had it all apart.

No problem. It also seemed to have fixed my original issue where the car would die out or have trouble starting after the car had been running shortly before. The cars idles perfectly now, hits boost and has been trouble free for the 100 miles I've tested it. So far so good.
