88' 13b not starting

I will keep this basic -

I drove this car daily for about a month. had the normal flooding issues here and there. One day, I started it and turned it around in the driveway, i shut it off normally, and then it hasn't started since.

The primary thing i notice is that there is no hint of igniting the gasoline. it spins faster and makes no sound out the exhaust. so i tested for spark at the end of the wires - no signal.

i tested for signal out the backside of the coils - nothing

i tested power and signal into the coils - have power, have signal pulse when turning over...

so i have the power and signal going in to the coils - but not coming out to the wires/plugs...

im confused - what could be the issue? how could this have happened so suddenly and at the same time with both ignition coils??

Thank you so much for your help,

Matt T.

Have you verified that the coils are actually not producing a spark but testing with a spark tester or simply by laying a plug on the shock tower?

I can't see all 3 ignitors on the car failing at the same time. How did you check for a pulse at the leading from the ECU? By using a scope?

Ignoring ignition for a moment, are you sure it just isn't seriously flooded? Have you tried to deflood the engine and then put a bit of oil into each chamber to get it going? Injector failures happen and you could have an injector locked open.

Aaroncake has a point there, it could be seriously flooded. You say you only turned the car around in the driveway? How long was the car running for? If the car did not reach normal operating temperature it is a good chance it is really badly flooded. Try the deflooding procedure

My fc has had some major issues with flooding. Ive had to disconnect my ecu to stop the injectors from firing, remove the spark plugs and put oil into the housing just to get anything to happen. You should know if the coils are getting a signal to fire by watching the tach. If it doesn't move then you know the coils are no getting the proper signal to fire. Make sure your plugs and wires are in decent condition too, weak spark will never be able to fire in any kind of flooded engine.

Thank you very much for your replies. I didn't think it was flooding because the turnover lost that "buhbuh, buhbuh, buhbuh" sound like there was even a little bit of fuel firing but not starting, it's just a smooth sound like the starter is just spinning the rotors with nothing else happening.

I am definitely going to try the standard flooding fixes that you guys have mentioned and see if anything changes. I have flooded it bad before, but it would always start a few hours later. this has been sitting for like 4 weeks now and still wont do anything.

thnak you for the advice, ill try a few things and see if I can make any progress!

You can try checking the fuel pump to make sure it didnt die on you and make sure that your battery is good and charged or it will flood your engine even worse.

Good tip on the wires. I have the dreaded flooding problem too and have it semi cured with a fuel cut off switch. I assumed it's a leaky injector but I'm not up for taking everything apart to test those yet. Changing my still original wire set is worth the try. How long can they last anyway?

Spark plug wires go with a basic tune up. They should be changed about every 3,000 miles.

Yes I agree. When I first got it last year, I did plugs/wires/fuelfilter/airfilter/trans/diff/coolant. - the basic stuff.

drove it about 4K miles total since, now it sits haha.

I am hoping to get a bit of time tomorrow morning to do the flooding proceadure, but im not sure if its going to do it. It really sound different. If it doesnt work, I will take a video/sound clip of what I'm experiencing and put it on youtube, then maybe we can figure it out a bit better.

thanks!

Quick way to see if it is flooded: take out spark plugs,If wet=flooded.

One common thing people do is when their engine floods, they do not replace the spark plugs which is recommended. I havent always replaced them but I would clean them with a wire brush and air compressor to blow out loose dirt and crap.

first time my 86 flooded it was dead for 4-5 days before i found help in the forums.
it sounded really different like it had no fire, i pulled fuse, turned it over and over and over and still didnt start lol. so i cleanes plugs, squirted a little oil and it fired right up,smoked like a chimney but it got it going.
good luck with the fix
