87 13b na running issues

Hi first Mazda I have ever owned. Runs rough. Wont stay running. Cuts out and jerks all rpm range. Gets better a little sometimes after 4000rpm. Everything is stock. Any clues? Please help.

Yes the car has been sitting. Just bought the car recently so its run like those sense I got it. And I haven't done anything to it yet. And everything is bone stock, exhaust intake everything. Don't know if plugs or filters have ever been changed. And it also has a very hard cold start if I didn't already mention that.

Before you do a tune, I do recommend verifying spark. pull the plug wires and see if it arcs consistently.

If your battery is weak and you have a weak alternator that could do it too.

Check Fuel pressure, wouldn't be surprised if your fuel filter/pump/tank is clogged.

Perform a proccess of elimination
Air Filter check (vacuum lines/bad senosors/bad connection)
Battery check
Alternator check
ignition system check (coil/plugs/wires)
Fuel check (quality/age/pump/filter)

My plug wires were wrong
Trailing 1>o o<trailing 2
Leading 2>o o<leading 1
The leading wires are backwards right? I swapped them around and it ran exactly the same

Your Leading coil wires fire at the same time so really it is not important which wire goes to what Leading plug.It just looks better when tracing wires that your Leading L1 wire goes indeed to L1..lol
NOW your Trailing wires ARE important and the Coil is actually Marked on the plastic coil cover to tell you which coil is T1 and which is T2..
If those 2 trailing wires are mixed you would DEFINITELY know it..the engine would really kick up a fuss.

No need to type in code. The lead coil fires at the same time so it does not matter if they are switched. Trailing does matter though. T1 goes to the front rotor top plug position and so on.

Well thank you. There in the right place now anyways. And runs like absolute crap. Backfires. Wont stay running.. occasionally it will stay running and bounce from 500 rpm to 2000rpm. The plugs where pretty wet and actually gritty looking. Grit might just be carbon hen taking them out. There are a few plugs here and there that I can't figure out what they go to.

Larger plug looks like the plug to the Water Thermosensor which is screwed into the back of the water pump near the alternator. This sensor is rather important to the running of the car. It would have a Green/White wire and a Black or Brown wire.

On the top of the thermostat housing is a sensor w/the prong sticking straight up. This is where the Black plug w/the G/B wire goes to. It's for the auxiliary electric fan found on some cars and your car might not be equipped w/this option.

Then you leave the plug alone.

It's for the auto adjusting suspension, which your car likely does not have. At the very end of the wiring diagram in the FSM is a detailed illustration of all the plugs/connectors for each of the wiring harnesses.

You have an S4, so 86-88 would basically use the 88 version since it's the only one online to use. There are some minor differences between the early S4 and later S4's but for the most part it is the same.
