VA 84 RX7 GS Acceleration question

Hello all, I'm new to the RX7 world with my month old 84 GS. I know the car has 100 HP, but is there any way to make my first gear more useful? First gear literally allows me to start moving up to ~15 mph, almost redline. I also own an 04 RX8, and its first gear pushes up to ~30 mph. Is the reason just because of the HP difference? I know I'm a noob, lol. I've never worked on or with cars before, and I want to learn everything about my cars. Please forgive my ignorance. *bows*

Taller wheels or a rear end ratio change.

The 1st gen 1st gear is very short...

Problem is, if you do mount taller wheels or larger gears, you're going to lose any semblance of performance. You might have to get out and push to get off a wad of gum.

The little 12a motor is an amazing piece of work, but it needs the high revs to produce power. Let it rev.

Best thing you can do is throw on a free flowing exhaust and a better carb. Exhaust is expensive due to the need to withstand the incredible heat of a rotary exhaust. Carbs can be anywhere from cheap to expensive. I use a Sterling carb, and a Racing Beat exhaust. If you check out the videos in my signature then you can get an idea of the power and performance you can get out of these cars without going to extremes.

www.sterlingmetalworks.com (for carb info, if interested).

You've got a great performer, she's just being choked to death under all the emissions bs, a miserly carb, and a restrictive exhaust. But they really do perform once you start letting them breathe.

Good luck!

Thank you for the link. I'm learning tons about my carb already, lol. As far as exhaust is concerned, I'm a little confused. Do catalytic converters affect my exhaust at all, or are they two separate systems? Since the car is an antique, it doesn't have to pass state inspections; therefore the cats are completely unnecessary if I understand them correctly. I appreciate the help you're giving, it's awesome info!

Slightly off topic

Kentetsu, you said that you have a Racing Beat setup on exhaust, right? Will having these things done to my car make them illegal on the streets? I don't drive this car very often, being an antique and all, but I don't want to get pulled over for my exhaust, lol.

the only way u'd get stopped for the exhaust is if it's excessively loud and goes against any noise ordinance u have in ur state.

You are awesome. Thanks for throwing out all of my fears about cop encounters, lol. Near redline you can't hear my engine next to my friend's FD when it's idling.

The RB exhaust is actually very quiet. Not sure on the details of Virginia law, but if you are exempt from emissions then you should be all set...
