84 RX-7 out of storage

I just bought an RX-7 that had been in storage for three years (incorrectly). I have replaced all fluids, filters, hoses, etc., and am still having trouble with idle and engine running as it should, especially in second and third gear. I have both manuals and am going through the checklists, but has anyone else been through this? I would love some guidance!

Sounds like the carb needs a rebuild

It actually has fuel injection, not a carburator. My next step is to take apart and replace the fuel injection system (already did the filter). I am most worried about permanent engine damage to the picky rotary after being in storage so long. The master cylinder is also next, as my brakes are very squishy and the snow is about to fly here.

Ok. You must have the GSL-SE or have swapped a 13B or other fuel injected engine in your vehicle.

The fuel injection system is definitely a good place to start. Possibly look into a new fuel pump, and replace the fluid in the transmission maybe. Manuals are strong and tough, but a fluid flush may do the trick for your 2nd and 3rd gear issue.

I have an 84 GS and it too came out of storage and runs great for me. After the master cylander had to be replaced before it was driven the first time, new tires after the sitting had made them dry rot, sea foam to help the apex seals, fiddling with the throttle linkage so it wouldnt get stuck at full throttle, and fluid changes all around. You did some of these already and look into more basic maintanence before anything major.

I am not qualified in my own opinion to give you any more advice, so I hope that my post brings this up the list and someone with more experience sees this and helps you out.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Without question, the injectors will need to be serviced by an injection shop.

Yes! That is what I have!

Thank you so much. You have given me hope that the car is going to be ok. I also did the seafoam, but got nervous after reading through a big manual that said not to add anything! I know the engine is picky as I have had to search for places that sell fuel with a high enough octane!

Good luck and keep us posted!
Will do.

I had similar problems with a motorcycle that was "garage-kept" but had varnish in just about every place that was possible. I would tear apart the fuel system on that thing and replace whatever needed it
