87 n/a 1500 rpm cold/warm idle and popping

I'm having a tough time figuring out why my idle won't budge from 1500ish.

I set the tps with a dmm, checked all my vacuum lines, jumpered the initial set plug and tried to set the idle only the find the idle screw was turned all the way in already.

I backed it out and the idle went higher.

Strange part is I disconnected the bac and it won't idle at all. It starts, goes to 3k then slowly stalls.

With everything connected the idle will drop to about 1100-1200 with the headlights on and heater blasting.

Now when the car sits at 1500 it pops/missfires every 3-8 seconds. No pattern to it and it goes away with the slightest bit of throttle. It also goes away when the idle drops to 1200.

Car does have a cone filter and a full racingbeat exhaust from the header back with no cats and the airpump still attached but but the output line runs to just a breather.

I'm totally stumped. Any ideas?

Haha bummer man. I remember my idle issues, I actually could NEVER get mine below 1100.

First off, check your timing. Here's a link to the FSM: http://www.rotaryheads.com/PDF/2nd_gen/

The other problem, which isn't in the FSM, but what was causing the problem on mine- my primary throttle plate wasn't completely closing! It could be anything- misadjusted throttle or cruise cable, carbon on the butterfly plate, etc. What caused MINE to not close, was this- On the firewall side of the throttle body, there's a cantilever, which hits part of the primary's linkage. This is basically its "bump stop", so it stops closed at this point, & doesn't use the throttle bore as the bump stop, as it could easily get wedged/distort the aluminum of the TB, etc. Mine was ever so slightly bent, causing the throttle to just hang open the smallest amount.

Best way to check is to remove the snorkel going from AFM to TB, as well as the plastic elbow connected to the TB, & look at the throttle plates.

Keep in mind this must be done w/ the engine at operating temperature, as before that, it's bumped up to ~1500 rpm via the thermowax.

Good luck & happy wrenchings!

W/the car fully warmed up and idling try pressing upward on the throttle linkage at the front of the throttle body and see if this lowers the idle when you do so.

The idle does drop when I push up on the linkage. Do I need to adjust the throttle cable maybe? I backed the throttle stop screw all the way out and that had little to no effect

Just to chime in, I fixed my idle this morning using a DMM. I just made sure the Green/Red and Black/Red were at 1kohm at rest and the Yellow and Blue wire at about 1kohm also at rest. I was getting about 1500, sometimes 1800-2000, sometimes 1200, sometimes 1k. Now it's 700-900 at rest. Good luck man!
