1. You'll need a free flowing exhaust. Usually the Racing Beat exhaust is the one recommended, but it is very expensive. However, you can't go cheap here due to the high
temperature of a rotary's exhaust.
2. A modified carb that can take advantage of the new exhaust system. Holley, Weber, and there are some others that are recommended. My personal choice is the Sterling carb; www.sterlingmetalworks.com This is the lowest cost solution, and maintains driveability.
3. After all that, you'll need some suspension work to take full advantage of it; www.re-speed.com
If you want to see what the car will be like once all that is done, check out my videos by following the link in my signature line.

Read, read, read the faqs dude untill your brain hurts, and then read some more. 12a is your engine, bro. Bottom line, without serious cash, you can't make your automatic tranny fb any quicker than a lightly modded 5 speed. The three speed gears are just waaayyy to long.

Wait a minute, do you have an automatic transmission or a 5 speed manual?
It seems that you have an auto, so that question about installing a new clutch
doesn't sound right...
If you do have an auto tranny, I would watch for a cheap car with a blown motor or severe rust. You can find them for under $400.00 and then just strip out the tranny and clutch system, and part out the rest. You can easily make back your money by selling the unneeded parts on Ebay. Maybe watch for a car with an LSD rear end too, if your's doesn't already have one.

dude r u serious!? it's the engine in ur car! u have an automatic tranny in ur car, a clutch wont do u any good. search the site. aftermarket carbs and exhaust will get u more power from the stock 12a. for even more power, u'll need to do a rebuild and port work. and i seriously doubt a thermostat will help hp. if it does, only a dyno will show it.

Someone hasn't done his homework... I've logged many 'o hours on the FAQ 1st Gen section. There is a ton of information.
I myself would like to get my 12a a bit peppier...when I use the A/C it's like "reverse-horespower"... feels like I'm dragging 2 or 3 clydesdales behind the car...(I'm in Vegas...gotta have A/C...)
But she sure handles well for being 24 years old... I'll probably start with the exhaust, a high-flow catalytic converter and a new muffler. (all from Racing Beat?) Those three things add up to over 700 smacks already...
