79 Rx-7 dies without choke

Hello, I’m new to rotary's and would like some help troubleshooting this. Car starts up and idles with auto choke completely out, but as soon as the choke is disengaged the car dies. Also, it idles when I hold the choke out just a bit but once I let go it dies on me.

Check for vacuum leaks around the carb and rates nest.

I checked and all is good, I did a compression test and have low compression in the rear rotor, roughly 50 psi so I figured now just a rebuild should be best.

The symptoms you described suggest a potential issue with the idle mixture or fuel delivery. Since the car idles fine with the choke engaged, but dies when disengaged, consider the following: Idle mixture adjustment: Check the idle mixture screws (usually located on the carburetor) and adjust them to ensure proper air-fuel ratio.
Also inspect the fuel filter and pump for any blockages or worn-out conditions.

Do you know if the carb has ever bern vleaned/rebuilt? I've had this issue with a carbed Toyota in Japan.

If this was a fuel delivery issue, it would happen regardless of the choke position. The worse thing one can do is compensate of a vacuum leak by adjusting the Air/Fuel.

With the choke out, the RPMs will be higher, somewhat hiding for bad compression.

Did you use a rotary compression tester?
