Smile 6ft 265lbs... Which one will fit best?

So I am in the market for an RX7... trouble is, I dont have a easy time finding cars to try out.. most likely will go out of town anyways to find the sweetest one I can find... Low mileage, excellent condition etc..

I am not a small person nor am I huge mind you.. I have never really had a problem with any car insofar as head or leg room but I do have a problem with width as my hips will dig into the doors or seats if they are really cramped. For example:

1st gen Miata, VERY tight hip wise, and it feels like Im sitting ON the car and not in it. Yuck.. not for me

2) MR2 spyder. Fits perfectly but I dont want to spend 14 grand

Just some ideas to give you some comparison as to what I fit it well.

Does the model with the sunroof take up head room or is this a non factor?

Which years would have more room that others?

Thanks for you help! Its much appreciated.

You didn't specify what year you were considering, but the interior dimensions of FCs can be found in the dealer brochures: https://www.rx7club.com/new-member-rx-7-technical-256/specifications-what-did-2nd-generation-rx-7-come-w-options-standard-features-963417/. Yes, models with sunroofs cut a little bit into the headroom.

Howdy!

As noted by RR88, several bits of info that would be helpful.

What gen are you looking for? 1st? 2nd? 3rd?

Sunroof models, independent of generation, always have less head room.

By far the smallest of the cars will be the FD.

I'm 6'6", 240. Being that I'm a bit longer than you, my weight is distributed a little differently but at least for me, it is certainly more a challenger width-wise in the care than length-wise.

They are a couple "Big Boys" that I know of that fit in FD's but they are putting up with a certain amount of discomfort between the driver side door panel and the trans-tunnel area. They are also rocking 330mm steering wheels to help.

Good luck!

Hi, sorry for the vagueness.. Most likely I would go for either a 1st or 2nd generation. I have been in a 3rd gen and they are way too tight for the same reason you mentioned Gringo.

Thanks!
Peter

I am right there with you Peter, 6' and 260 and I own and daily drive an FD. I love it, I get in and out easily. I bought the model without a sunroof for exactly the reason you stated but now that I look at it I don't think I would have had a problem with either.

Edit: I have stock steering wheel and seats.

ok, today tried both a 1st gen and 2nd gen. 1st gen was very tight with no headroom and difficult to get out of. The 2nd gen was better, a bit wider and this was a convertible so my head touched the roof but didn't force me to scrunch down. Will try and find a non sunroof model and a FD to try out tomorrow.

I'm 18. 6'3 180lbs and I drive an fc with a sunroof. Headroom is fine but my seat is in a relaxed position.

6'7" 300lbs and rocking a 1st gen with 2nd gen seats and a slightly smaller wheel, some days I'll bump my head on the sunroof but with the seat nearly all the way back and leaned a little, I can fit comfortably, I'll be looking into a bucket seat bolted to the floor later for maximum head room.

1st gen: Stock Wheel and Stock Seat? No. Bucket seat and deep dish wheel? Perfect.

2nd Gen: Stock Wheel and Stock Seat? Close enough. Haven't been in an FC with a different seat so dunno.

3rd Gen: Stock Wheel and Stock Seat? lolnoway.

I'm only 5' 10", also 265ish. 1st gen but I've got rx8 seats in it that sit a little higher on driver side, a bit higher still on passenger side. 330mm steering wheel and sunroof. Feels great sitting in it. Little extra twisting getting in and out, always seem to trap a foot under pedals getting in.

Yeah, gotta agree with ya about the 3rd Gen. I barely fit at 6'3" 215 lbs. Couldn't imagine any more height or weight in my stock seat with stock steering wheel. On that note though for the OP... if there's a particular generation that you like, consider an aftermarket seat and steering wheel. I've got big hips and I fit very snugly in the stock seat and I'm long in the legs and am considering a smaller wheel to shift and brake easier =)

leg room is tight but you can't expect much better with such a lightweight car

'79 only, NOT '80+ does not sacrifice headroom for sunroof.
