Hi,

My project car has a 1983 12A with 3 speed automatic swapped in it.

The previous owner did the swap and buggered up the floorpan installing the shifter. I am planning on taking it to a custom fabricator to fix up the shifter.
However, I am dreaming of swapping in an overdrive automatic later and have been surfing ebay, etc.

I searched for automatic swaps in the archive but did not find much. I am not interested in performance or racing so the manual does not interest me (at least for this specific car), but the overdrive auto does sound like an improvement.

I did find one guy posted pretty much the same exact question back in '02 but had no response.

How different is the OD auto in the first gen with the 3 speed?
Are mounts, shifter the same, similar, or completely different?
How different is the gen 2 OD automatic from the gen 1 3 speed?
To swap a gen 2 auto, do I follow the same rule of thumb as the manual cars as far as the balancing? Any other gotchas?

Unfortunately, I don't get a lot of spare time to work on my projects.
But I did get time to find what I believe is a 1990/1991 13B. It included the wiring harness, ECU, and a manual tranny. So I'll be swapping out the 12A. The 12A is pretty tired anyways and I like that with the 13B I won't have a big honkin distributor taking up space.
Anyways, I am still looking for an OD automatic. (I'm fishing here, but I would consider an even trade of my manual box for a gen 2 OD slushbox if anyone in central Florida is interested.)
Once I get my gen 2 OD auto tranny I will put it side to side with the old 3 speed and post a comparison.
