AL 20b? 26b? and port questions.

first i'd like to state, that i did search. nothing answering my questions that i could find.

I am purchasing a 91 gxl. its an s5 13b NA with gomez high flow cat and full Apexi GT Cat back dual exaust with y pipe. supposedly those aren't available anymore from what i hear. but i'm not sure. all of my questions are in respect to this car.

what are the bridgeports, street ports and such and what is the difference between each. also what are the pro's and cons, is there a how to? how will my engine react to one, and will i need a stand alone? around how much power can i expect with one? and is it reliable?

which vehicles did the 20 and 26b engines come in, or are they just a creation from people like us? where can i find them? are they reliable? and is swapping one in worth the hassle?

sorry for the dumb questions, answers and links are appreciated.

Austin

In this particular board, there are no dumb questions...I know the 20B was a JDM engine you could buy in a Cosmo right off the showroom floor, I don't know about the 26"b"...let's see what the historians have gotta say...

20bs come from the Mazda Cosmo which was a JDM car. (Or maybe it was in Aus, whatever it isn't in the US or Canada). So you'll have to buy those parts and assemble it here or buy a block and import it.

To put a 20b into an RX-7 is quite difficult. It can be done, but you will need to work out all sensors, wiring, ECU, etc in addition to the physical layout. The 20b motor might only cost $5k, but installing it will usually far exceed that in cost.

26b is a special setup used in a few custom builds and some Mazda-built racing engines like the Lemans entries of the early 90's. Unlike a 2- or 3- rotor, a 4-rotor requires a 2-piece eccentric shaft. You cannot buy these as crate or used motors. A very few have engineered their own eccentric shafts, manifold, and plenum and put them together from 2-rotor and 3-rotor parts. Either way this is an extremely difficult (read: expensive) project.

welcome to the board.

try THIS

get the thoughts 0f 20B- and 26B-swaps out of your head for a while. learning is fine, but you WILL destroy yourself if you try to start a swap.

Starting off with a 20B is the worst possible thing you could do. Not only will the project most likely not be finished, but you will end up bad mouthing something about the car or motor and not having a full understanding.

To answer your other questions. Porting a motor does not always require a stand alone, but having a piggy back controller is a MUST. Rtek, PFS Purple Box, etc. are a couple of examples. However if you want the most power AND best reliability, a standalone ECU is the best option. There are many options to choose from.

My advice to you is read the FAQ's thoroughly of which generation you are interested in. It's how everybody started off on this forum.

20B information is still quite scarce just based on the cost of it all. Start off small, and build up to reading about the 13B-RE/REW motors, then go onto 20B's, etc. If you read about the 20B right off the bat, you won't think of anything else but that.

Yes, it is very dead. I have seen two RX-7's in the past two years. But it's peaceful and there is no crime at all.
