Stock radio or aftermarket? Most stereos will dim if there are power issues but not flash. Is the LCD going completely dark then coming back on?

HAHA Yea Ive seen my share of 8 tracks too. Might just be time to change the head unit out. New aftermarket unit with all the stuff you need for an install should be under $150ish. Will depend a lot on the unit and if you install it yourself.

Aww, no one seems to have love for stock head decks...

I say take it to an auto electrician, they will have, or know of a person to help you with fixing the original unit if you want to retain it. Seems there may be a dry solder join or perhaps the tape "heads" are dirty, and this is a warning feature?

the radio is a stock 91 rx7 unit with cd and cassete players . The readout face just flashes "Tape" constantly . This all started after I tried to insert a cassette but it just kept spitting it out . I guess the tape player is shot . Now I can't see the radio station on the read out screen ...thanks all

Well it is 21 years old so they tend to do that.
You know that is LIFE.. after ..say 18.They do what they want, leave the house start drinkin, get pregnant, borrow the car and ..and..What were we talkin' about?.haha!
Oh ya..Look on the Sec Gen parts section or put up a Wanting to Buy if you really insist on buying the stock deck!
