1990 Tubo II as a daily driver

hey,

i own a single cam ka 240sx, i turbocharged it and blew it up. I should have pulled some more timeing out of the highload sections of the ignition maps. live and learn.

anyways, i noticed a 1990 rx7 Turbo II for sale locally a few days ago. I test drove it and it seems like a solid car. cosmeticly, it is MINT. Its showing 146XXX kilometeres. it has never been rebuilt and the orgional owner still has it. only mods are a raceing beat intake and exhaust.

the only issue i found was it won't rev past 6500 in first gear, its not like its hitting a rev limiter it just kind of fades off if that makes any sense. I love the car and the sound it emits is sex for your ear drums lol.......

however, from what i have read it seems 146 xxx kms is alot for a turbo rotary. i want this to be a reliable daily driver in the summer and it will see some autox and drag racing. i do not have a rotary compression tester, but after doing some research i think i understand how to the "psst....psst..psst' test. lol

it wasn't started in 2 weeks and shut off once when started. it was fine after that. it jumped to 2000 rpm first when started and then went to less than 1000 rpm after that. which i understand is too build oil pressure?

Does this sound like a good car for what i want?and when i say daily driver i mean it has to get me to university and take some abuse i will give it regualry. shouldn't be too much to ask of a sports car. i am the type of person who keeps up on matainance, but i also have a heavy foot.

Thanks,
Matt

With that mileage probably not , though thats my opinion. Its a great car if you are willing to invest the time and money to make it a daily driver. Add about another 2k+ on top of the asking price for a new rebuild and other wear and tear parts. How much are they asking? Good luck..

he was asking $5000, does not seem willing to go below $4500. i do have more budget to put into the car..... i just don;t want to have to rebuild it before the winter.

i could add a fmic, colder plugs, and metal intercooler piping. if the ecu is chipale and the address file is avilable - i can pull timing under boost as well.

I am scared to buy it because it seems these motors do not give any warning before they blow.

It's do-able. I used to daily drive my 1990 Turbo II with 220k miles on it. No problems. However, Mine doesn't have any of the issues that your car does.

For a car that hits a wall at 6500 RPM, the price should be a hell of a lot lower then $5000. That's a major and obvious problem, so $2000 seems more reasonable.

The issue may be due to a number of things. First find out how much boost it is running at that RPM point. It may just be hitting fuel cut. My guess is that due to the exhaust and intake, fuel cut is the most likely scenario.

The car should jump to 3K upon startup, then after 17 seconds fall to 1500, then gradually fall to an idle of 750 RPM. If it does not eventually idle at 750 RPM, then something is wrong. Most likely a vacuum leak or poor tune.

price does seem a little steep considering the problem, but if you like it and dont mind getting dirty, then buy it.

like everyone else said. it is do-able, but not without throwing some "assurance" money into it.

The Canadian dollar has been on par or worth more then the US dollar these days, so don't take that as the reason the price is higher.

The cars are generally rarer over here, and the sad fact is that even if someone is selling a complete pile of broken junk, they still tend to ask ridiculous amounts for it.
