1988 vert won’t start unless staring fluid is used

Recently the car hasn’t been wanting to start but if I use starting fluid it will start and after that the car runs perfectly it only needs it on start ups the car is mostly stock i did the rats nest delete, recently deleted the omp during my owner ship I’ve always premixed I’ve owned the car for two years now also had a full racing beat exhaust the 5th and 6 ports never worked since I got it the actuators are there just not hooked up. I thought it was the pump cause it wasn’t priming I wired it to a switch and still nothing any help would be greatly appreciated

welcome to the board.

have you tuned the car up since you've had it? at the very least, do you know how old the plugs are?

recently changed probably like 100 miles on them I change them about twice a year what I’m scared about is it having low compression the motor has 100k plus I’m not sure of the exact number odometer stopped reading long ago

okay. so is it just the first start (when cold) that you have to use the starter fluid, or is it everytime you start the car?

does the car happen to smoke at all? do you find yourself having to top off the coolant every once in a while?

I don’t believe the coolant seals are bad recently I’ve had to top off the coolant but it’s because it has a leak it does smoke sometimes but it’s oil not coolant and yes sometimes it will start on its own when it’s warmed up but it has to crank quite a bit with the staring fluid it will turn on right away

well, for now, the only other thing that comes to my mind is (maybe?) the starter. are you sure it's turning fast enough? maybe check it out. clean your terminals and the main connections at the engine block and at the starter itself.

other than that, i'll start reaching ...

- dirty injectors?

- a bad tank of gas - you said it started this recently. does it coincide with a recent fill-up?

outside of it being any of those ideas, i think you're just going to have to start checking things to confirm or rule out. check your compression. check the integrity of your cooling system.

starter is new I also have a jump pack connected and have an optima red top so it has to be spinning fast enough it could be an injector but that wouldn’t explain it running rich it iddles high 11’s low 12 afr could it be an ecu issue?
