Where exactly is the smoke coming from? The exhaust or the engine bay?
If the car is overheating, stop driving it.
See cooling troubleshooting at http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/cooling.htm
If it smells like it is on fire, check to make sure the cats aren't glowing red.

its coming from the engine bay, also the metal on the gear stick gets really hot aswell. the temperature gauge stays at a low temperature so i dont think its over heating .any clue still?

Sounds as though the engine is dumping fuel into the exhaust, heating the cats up. And the heat shields are missing.
So, now you need to figure out why.
Pull the spark plugs and check to see if one rotor is a lot richer (black, oily, soot) than the other (which should be dark tan to slightly black as long as the plugs aren't years old).
