1987 NA, trouble starting

Hey there gang!

Quick question. I was given a 1987 mazda rx7 base model. Because of transmission and starting problems.

My main issue is getting it to start. I am new to the world of rotary but I imagine I can uses regular people troubleshooting Lol.

I could hear the starter click when I turned the key, so I gave the old started a good beating and it started right up!

To my surprise the idle was smooth, no white smoke or anything. I took it out and drove for about 15 mins and parked again. I decided to get a new starter and install it and bam! It started like a charm!

I left the car parked for two days since I have to register it and get a couple more parts but this morning it started having the same issues. I clicks but it won't turn over. I was able to use the clutch on a down hill "which I don't want to have to do" to start it.

My next step is replace the battery. Anyone have an issue like this? Or any tips?

Thank you for your time.

how is the clutch?
There is an interlock switch that is on the clutch that needs to be "hit"" by the pedal in order to start the car.
If that switch is not activated(maybe due to a faulty switch or bad clutch pedal position) then it will not allow the car to start.

He said it "clicked" though, i would think that means the interlock switch is working, but theres still a pussibility it isn't. Check the switch, get the starter tested or replace it to be safe, and check your grounds, could have one messin with ya

The 2nd gen clicking starter issue isnt exactly that uncommon. First thing I would take the battery to a local parts store(autozone, napa, ect) and let them test it. If the CA's or CCA's is low it should be replaced, even if that isnt the problem here.

There is a starter relay that goes out. i've had it happen to me if you run a jumper wire down to the starter where the ignition wire goes and disconnect the ignition wire to plug in your jump wire. Then touch the battery and the starter should in gauge. if it does then most likely the relay is out .

You can also clean any cable connections to the Starter and battery.
I found that the stock ground(goes to the Big long bolt on the top of the starter) will sometimes just not provide enough contact and you get the click, click.
I changed my ground contact area and ran the negative right TO the starter instead of that stupid bolt.
Problem solved.
