1984 Mazda RX-7 fuel pump cut relay

Is there a fuel pump relay on the 1984 Mazda RX7 GSL? I see it in the wiring diagrams in the haynes manual I have, but it doesn't say a word about it in the book, like where is it located in the car? I have taken a relay out from under the dash and found it is the power antenna relay, its 1 digit off the model number for the fuel pump relay.

The fuel pump in my car doesn't receive power all the time, I have checked with a voltmeter at the fuel pump connection in the back. I have taken the fuel line off the carb and it pumps fuel, but then it'll stop, the power loss is intermittent. I can only think it's a fuel pump relay that is going haywire since I can jump the fuel pump and it will run. I appreciate any info you can provide me, thanks.

Also, I was wondering if there is an inertia switch located in these cars? i had hit a 12" curb in this car and since that point I have been having this problem with the fuel pump not working, then working, and not working again... This is really starting to erck my nerves, I am about to just hotwire the pump from the battery with a switch and call it a day.

Make sure that your trailing ignition is functioning first. Without having spark on the trailing (top) spark plugs, the fuel pump will not run. This was done to ensure that the motor was capable of running before it started sending fuel. Weird.

If that checks out, then the relay you seek is located right under the steering wheel. Run a search in the 1st gen tech section, and you will find writeups on the location and how to apply a jumper to bypass the relay.

Good luck...

ok cool, so when I get off work I will check the trailing spark plugs for spark. My next question is what exactly is the ignitor? Is this the coil? I saw someone say switch the ignitors on the dizzy, not exactly sure I know what that means. Im assuming there is another part other then the (2) coils and the distributor? If not then I think I know what I am looking for.

second question, can someone tell me if the driveshaft of an 84 will bolt to a 1985 gsl-se LSD rear? I had a mechanic tell me he had to switch my driveshaft some years ago when I had the rear put on because the original wouldn't fit the rear, was that a bunch of BS? I know he owned a RX7 and now my driveshaft U-joints have went bad since then, is this my paranoia setting in? I need to find a driveshaft or at least a U-joint to replace the old one with.

Thanks.

I'm not entirely certain that he can access the search engine there, so I found this for him...which is the preferred way for the older members to respond to these threads in the New Member boards...

On the outside of your distributor casing, you will see 2 small black squares with wiring attached to them. Those are the igniters. The one one the side facing the driver is the "trailing" the one nearest the alternator is the "leading". They are held on by two screws, and control when the coil discharges to the distributor.

Thanks, I appreciate the help, I found out I have spark at both the leading and trailing sparkplugs, but the power is still not at the fuel pump when I crank the engine. I'm guessing the fuel pump relay is the culprit, but I can't find the relay under the dash, there is one relay or switch on the right side (when facing the steering wheel) under the dash that looks like it's bolted to the steering column but I think it's the ignition switch, it's round and brass? Other then that I only see two other relays, one says headlight relay switch and the other one I took it out of the car and mazda dealer said it's the power antenna relay, I dont see another relay under the dash. Does anyone know what the relay looks like in this model car?

I also might have a bad wire, I wiggled the wiring harness running to the ignitors and the alternator and I noticed sometimes I have power running to the pump, very wierd??

Hey guys thanks for the help! I have finally figured it out, the switch that I thought was the ignition switch was the fuel pump relay, I jumped it and the pump has power.
