1984 gls aux in
Hi all. First post here. I had a question regarding the factory stereo on the fb rx-7. Is there an aux in port in the back of it? If not, is it possible to wire one in? I really don't want to get a new stereo (i don't really want my interior looking like a space ship, also money), but i would like to play music from my phone.

I am pretty sure that in 1984 the "Auxiliary input" would have been slang for your "butt!..lol.
So NO,the Stereo would not have it.
BUT(pardon that!),I have seen some threads in the Audio section that some guys have come up with ways to get around that and hook up an AUX IN.
You may want to check that Section out.
and with that..WELCOME to the Forum..now go and post an INTRO.

You could always get one of the tape player adapters that were used before CD players were found in cars.
like this. maxell 191210 MP3 Accessory - Newegg.com

A Replacement Aftermarket Stereo should be around the same price as a used stock deck on Craigslist, etc that has the capability to input another device.
I've seen $50 dollar CD players with Input capability,so if $50 bucks is "too much" you are gonna have a rough "go" with keeping this car going!..(no offense,I find these cars a little "prissy" and require more attention than normal.)

On a side note, how is the sound quality of the factory speakers in the FBs? I'm not one of those people that has to have subwoofers loud enough to shake your rib-cage, I just like it when my music is clear and undistorted.

There is a forum member who has successfully wired an aux into his factory deck. If you want the stock unit for aesthetic reasons, it can be done. My car came to me with an 80's Alpine cassette deck but stock speakers. I upgraded to an 'entry level' Alpine unit with USB. I find that it looks no more space age than the cassette it replaced, and not out of place, to me anyway. And I'm an old dude, so to speak.
I replaced all the stock speakers with Polks. The rear stock speakers are actually quite good. Replacing the fronts made a much more noticeable difference. Later I added Polk tweeters on the dash. These made the greatest difference by raising the soundstage. They look a little out of place, but I'm used to them, and they're tiny.
If you listen to music played on actual instruments you will not need a subwoofer at all. That's with the stock or aftermarket head unit.

Well, there would be no sense in upgrading the stereo and still using paper cone 1980 speakers.
The stereo would still sound like "Sheit".
I put a pioneer in my FC and ran a Power amp and 4 speakers in the stock location.(stock size, cheapie speakers)
Metallica sounds Real good...
All together I think I am at about 175 bucks...and Ya,I didn't want a box with 2 -12's in it stickin in the middle of my car either..it's a car not a damn Audio Parts warehouse!
