1983 RX7 First one, where to start with car
Well I found a rx7 at a great price. I had planned on just flipping it for more money but then I changed my mind and I gonna keep it for a little while. I started it by putting gas in the carb and it started right up but then died. I did it a few more times and it did the same thing. I know after looking on this site that it means the carb may need to be rebuilt. I plan on starting the rebuild as soon as possible but the funny thing about it is I do not have a clue on earth on how or where to start on the carb or the car for that matter. I mean mygod a choke how do I use that thing. Nikki has a window I can look in and see her guts but where is the window.
The point is I need help all the way from point A to Z. Where do I start. I need to learn all the parts on the carb and what they do. How do I drain all the fluids and put new fluid in it. I think everybody gets my point and would really love the help. Well thanks to all and have a good night.

welcome to the board.
am i correct in assuming that you have already confirmed that the car has active fuel flow (pump and filter are good) before you decided that the carbie needs a rebuild?
in the event that you actually do need a rebuild, the rebuild kit should come with schematic. at least, mine did.

No, the fuel pump is out on it, but I run fuel through a funnel attached to a hose and lifted it about three feet above the carb.I would think that would have plenty of gravity to force it in the carb. It would start but the flood out. So I just poured gas straight into the carb and then use a spary bottle to try to keep in running. It would do the samething and flood out after starting. So I took the carb off and I the separated the carb into the two pieces and found out that is was full of junk, and one of the floats was stuck. I went and bought some carb cleaner and let it soak in the cleaner for 4 hours. It is as clean as new. I am going to put it back on tomorrow and see what happen.
How do I drain the fluids the proper way? I read somewhere about taking the first spark plug out and something happening, what is that all about?
Thanks for your help it is greatly appreciated

Well since the car has been sitting for about three years, I figure I need to drain them all and put all new it "her". What is this that I heard about taking the first spark plug out? What will that do?

Hey Benjamin, welcome to the boards. I would start with downloading the FSM from here; http://foxed.ca/index.php?page=rx7manual
There is also a ton of information in the 1st gen forum under the "sticky". Check out the FAQ thread.
The spark plug trick can be to check for compression. There should be three "psst" sounds equally spaced when you crank the engine over with the spark plug out. This is the poor man's compression check. You will have to do it with a rear spark plug a well.
You can also use it to help deflood the engine, I believe.
I buy my carb rebuild kits from Autozone. There kits are pretty good. I would read the fsm before hand. Good luck. Have fun!
