1982 rx2 s2 sa22c 12a gearbox issues
Hey guys , well im in need of a little bit of help .
basically its like this . my rx7 make a hell of a noise when i decelerate in most gears. got told it was bearings.
So got a quote for $1400 to rebuild that's Aussie dollars .
now im wondering if i should pay and get a rebuild or if i should buy a different gearbox altogether and install that.
So what i need to know is what gearboxes can fit my 1982 s2 rx7 12a , can a s3 or s4 or s5 or what . i have been googling for about a week now and still have not found any concrete answers.
was told a rx4 box can fit straight on but i dunno . any help here would be great ay.
Thanks guys

My 83 had a similar problem (lots of vibration, noise while decelerating) when I first got it, had the clutch replaced at a local shop. While they were replacing my clutch they found that the the original needle bearing had failed completely. The outside case of the bearing was stuck in the tranny, while the needles were in pieces.
I would wait for a member with more mechanical knowledge to reply, but it could be as simple as a tranny drop and pilot bearing ($7 CAD) replacement..

I'm actually in the same boat here, my trans bearings are whining like crazy in anything but 5th.
I've been searching for a reputable trans rebuilder in my area, and hoping for the best.
However, upon some research, Mazdatrix has a writeup on using a Miata gearset in your stock RX7 trans case. They say they have the same number of splines, but you need to machine the input shaft down to fit.
I would imagine it would be tremendously easier to find a rebuilt miata gearset than a Rex one. I'm not sure if it would work, but, the thoughts of swapping a gearset out of a 6 speed Mazdaspeed Miata kinda gets me excited.
Anyone have any further info on this conversion?

it's not a mod for the feint of heart. not only does it require intimate knowledge of how the tranny works internally, it also requires special tools (pronounced: either quite expensive and/or needs to be fabricated - oh and you'll probably only use me once, nyah-nyah).
that said, if you're interested, there is a member here currently doing this to his Gen II. i'll need to find the thread to link it, but i'll try to get it done tonight.
just an opinion here though ... N/A transmissions are relatively easy to find and they are affordable. they run for miles and miles reliably. you might just want to get one and replace yours.
