1979 12a with Nikki help?
Ive been looking for a page i saw awhile ago from Sterling Metal Works that had some ballpark settings for a stock 12a Nikki. Ive been having issues with mine sputtering on WOT unless i have the choke on regardless of engine temp. I have new coils, points and wires, and will be putting new plugs in shortly. I live in the Wisconsin 5 county area so everything has ethanol and is reformulated so with these things in mind.
my questions
1)does anyone know good ballpark settings for a stock nikki?
2) would you recommend br7's or br8's with WI weather and burning oil and the
fuel i have to burn
3)I rebuilt the carb a year ago, with the gas Ive been running, should i Rebuild it
again?
I'm (relatively) new to the rotary scene and would love to keep mine kickin'. any help is appreciated even if it just redirects me to somewhere i overlooked.

I believe its a fuel or spark related issue because it sucks air just fine and adding fuel with the choke clears up the sputtering. i have not hunted for any vacuum leaks as of yet.

Well some other info that might be helpful. This car sat from 97 to sept 2011 when i purchased it with 73036 on it. put a fuel filter in and seafoam in the carb and tank and it fired right up. rebuilt the carb at 74,500. ran great, constantly change the fuel filter, consistant castrol gtx 20-50 oil changes, new coils points and wires, with new plugs and a reman distributor slated for later this month. i have a RB Exhaust flange on the way to block the lower two ports on my block as i have an 82 manifold (pictures tomorrow) on the car as my burned through on the inside and blew out the Air pump pipe at the bottom. if i could just get some suggestions for my questions it would help greatly.
as for number 1, i have the AAS at 1 1/2 out and the MAS 4 out

Its kind of frustrating that in an environment surrounded with all like minded people I cant get simple answers >.> oh well
advanced autos part numbers were off, the NGK catalog said br7et's were stock plugs so i ordered those
as of now the AAS is at 2, im going to up it to 2.5 and the MAS is at 6, we'll see how that goes.

Now for the Exhaust.. Maybe
Now i have a question on exhaust manifold studs. Ive seen threads about inconel? studs. now that was a 3rd gen post, can i just get longer studs for my 12a or should i try and hunt down inconel? i have a RB exhaust flange to install and stock studs are .5 inch too short.

welcome.
regretfully, i never had a Series 1 car so i can't help with things like your points ignition and thermal reactor other than being able to identify them when i see them. anyway ...
what ethanol content are we talking about in your area?
... as far as the sputtering at WOT goes, my first question would be what fuel pump are you running? my next question is what do your plugs tell you? if you have something that supplies adequate volume, then my gut says to next check the timing. if the Nikki was (relatively) recently built and behaves fine in all other circumstances but WOT, then aside from some adjustments, it's probably fine.
on the exhaust studs, a board member had referred me to NAPA to source them. you'll need to go armed with thread pitch and length though.
i hope at least some of this helps.

and i have the stock fuel pump, im not sure if the previous owner put one on or if its original so to be safe its 17+ years old
im not sure what the timing is or if has been messed with but i will check that.
and thanks for the stud info, i believe its 10 x 1.5, ill keep it updated on what i find!

I'm not sure if this will help you or not, but I had some sputtering issues with my 84 with a 12a as well. I fixed it by changing out the spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. It ran smooth as silk after that. Whoever had the car before me had put in the nonstandard spark plugs with a normal ground strap, and I replaced them with the OEM NGK plugs. That made the biggest difference, to be honest. I also tweaked the timing a bit, but that was negligible once I had fixed everything else, I think it was already set pretty well.
