13b in porsche 944
hey whats up everyone ok to start out i got a 85 944 and i wanna change out that expensive *** motor! lol my question is i wanna drop a thinking 2nd gen motor i was just wondering how hard u think it will be and what i might need for the whole swap any info will be helpful
Youre going to need a lot of parts and youre going to need to get a lot of parts custom made like engine mounts and tons of other things. Youll need the entire engine, ecu, air flow meter, basically get a donor second gen Rx-7, strip it and start thinking of how your going to get everything to work in the Porsche. It would be cool to see since the second generation Rx-7 was modeled after the 944.
i was gonna do that with the 944 i had but decided that it would be a pain since theres a firewall right in the middle of the engine bay haha. plus the tranny setup is in the rear on a 944.
I didnt take a look at the car but now since you said that it seems that swap may be close to impossible or not worth the time, effort, and money spent just to put a rotary engine in the 944.

If it fits, your major concerns will be cooling as the rotary will need a large radiator and you'll need somewhere to mount the rather large oil cooler.
heres a link on the subject if u havent found it already

As an ex-944 guy, just do the LS-1 swap, if you use a hydraboost you can even keep the A/C and power steering as well as power brakes, and it keeps the front/rear balance very close to before the swap. Koni yellows all around, sticky tires and you are good to go.
If you are doing any big power swaps in a 944 keep in mind the R&P is extremely fragile, you'll need to upgrade to a turbo transmission at the bare minimum, and even then, expect to be snapping CVs unless you upgrade them (at which point you'll strip stub axles next).

The N/A transmission will hold ~250lb-ft unless you launch hard, in which case you can easily break the R&P with stock 2.5L engine power levels (~150-160hp). If you upgrade to the turbo trans you can generally get away with hard launches up to ~300lb-ft, at which point the CV joints typically let go. The general consensus over on rennlist and pelican is not to upgrade the CVs, as you want to keep the weakest link as something reasonably easy and cheap to replace. Also, the next weakest link isn't far behind so you don't gain much upgrading the CVs.
That said, LS1 swapped 944's are absolute BEASTS. If I ever go back to 944's you can bet I will be doing an LS1 944. Too much good money thrown after rebuilding the 2.5L turbo in my 951.

actually a friend told me to do that lol he said he can get me a 5.3 motor and i got a 82 camaro he told me something theres a adapter kit that i can use my turbo 350 trans with the 5.3 the camaro is just sitting there and it need alot of tlc so idk yet lol

I have watched a few videos and read a few articles about the comparison of the two cars and on wikipedia it says that the FC Rx-7 was modeled after the 944 and 924 when Japanese engineers came to America for ideas on how to build the next gen. Rx-7 when the first gen. was out and those two cars (924 & 944) were doing really well in America. North America is where most of the first gen. Rx-7s were sold so thats why they turned to here. The videos I watched said that the Rx-7 was to compete with the 944 because of the similar styling and power output and the fact the Rx-7 was cheaper in price.
