12A running rich after acceleration

Hey guys i have an 85 rx7 12a and up until a couple months ago it was running pretty well until the secondary diaphragm formed a hole. i replaced that and it ran perfectly for a couple weeks. Now there is a new problem.

What happens is after i accelerate hard, I.E. driving in 2nd gear or higher at 5k+ rpm, it will start running extremely rich and will not idle. Just to keep it from dying, i had to turn the idle up to about 1100 so i could feather it while this is occurring. If it dies after this occurs, i have to go through the deflooding method of pushing the pedal to the floor and turn the ignition for a few seconds about two or three times until it starts. On some occasion, it will just straight up die and will not let me start it for about 15 minutes in which case i just have to try the pedal to the floor thing once, it starts up and runs fine.

Any help with this would be amazing. also it seems to put out what looks like white smoke after this, but my coolant is no lower than it was the day i bought the car 6 months ago.

I think i found my problem. Only problem is i lost one of the nuts to hold the carb on while at it. I think it was my accelerator pump. i had my local 80's mazda rotary expert technician take it for a drive and that is what he told me. it seems to be acting better, but i still am kind of weary about not having all 4 bolts attaching the carb.

Change your fuel filter. You might be starving, not flooding the engine. Stock fuel filters barely flow enough fuel when brand new, so just a bit of dirt or rust will clog them up. First symptom of this is losing power at high rpms.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I changed put the fuel filter about a month ago and it helped some. I think it still had the original from 1985. But I am really trying to avoid doing a full carb rebuild. I am not very experienced in carburetors at the time. After changing the diaphragm, it acted perfect for about 48 hours. But also gas is pooling on top oft secondaries and causing them to have trouble opening. It causes a lot of hesitation up to about 3500 rpm. Soon as they open though it just goes. I wish I could find a sterling Nikki somewhere since that is what I want to upgrade to, but for now I want to get this one working.

It's a little late now but when you take things apart always take lots of pic or video to make sure you get things right . Gerald m

I am not sure how well you can see it, but here is an example of the gas pooling on top of my secondaries. i think the jets just keep firing fuel for some reason nonstop. the longer i go without going over 3500 rpm, the thicker that pool gets. for some reason it has done it constantly since yesterday evening.

Is it possible to change the floats and needles without removing the nikki carb from the car?

I just rebuilt the top half of the carb. The needle valves and seats did not look like they were closing properly. So I think that was my problem ir has been running perfect since then and the power feels more fluid through the entire band.
