I have a 1983 RX7 with a 12A engine. 74,000 miles on it. The engine has started making a "gasping" noise when I turn off the car. I also notice it slightly when I stomp on the throttle and then back off. As it idols down it will make the sound, just not as noticable as when I shut it off. I pulled the air filter cover off and the noise is definately coming from with in the engine. I can only describe the sound as a if someone was sucking air into their lungs with a partially closed throat. The car runs fine, idols ok. I read some posts about Carbon and was wondering if that might be the issue. Carbon build up. I store it for the winters and I have never de-carbonized it. Would that be something that would cause this sound? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

 

Probably just a slight backfire, which is a common thing. Not really an issue. This would sound like more of a "puff" than a "bang".

my 86 na back fires when i rev it up and let off the gas. it backfires with enough pressure to blow your hair around if your behind my car. my friend said he could see flames when it backfires. i havent seen em myself but hey if my car back fires then yours probaly ok

 

I know the puff sound, I've heard that before but that I hear more on the exhaust side. This is a different sound then that. I wish I could post a recording of it on here. I can't think of how to discribe the sound. It's a combination of air sucking in and maybe the sound of a wet disc brake as you ease off the brake pettle. I don't know if that helps at all. If there is a way to post a .wav file of the sound let me know. Thanks for the feed back. I would realy like to figure this out. Before I take it to the shop.
