12a checks before reinstall
I've got a 83 that came with the motor removed. I'm going to put it back in the car,
but it has sat for years, and I think I need to check it out before I put it back together and in the car.
At least I can do a compression test. However, the trans is still in the car,
so how can I attach the starter without the bell housing?
Should I actually disassemble it and look over the internals? It had new apex seals installed but that was years ago and it was not reassembled (other than the basic block) since.
I'd like to actually run it on the garage floor outside the car if possible.
If I can get the starter to work, what else would I need? I didn't notice a fuel pump on the engine, so I gather it is electric somewhere on the car (in tank maybe).
appreciate any advice.

welcome.
to be honest, it may be just as easy to drop the engine into the bay to test it as it would be try to setup a way to run it out of the car. understand that that's my opinion though.
compression test is the best tool and i wouldn't advise pulling the engine apart before you've tested it as is. whether you test in or out of the car, you should first make sure it turns by hand and see how many pulses you get. there should be 6.
fuel pump is electric - just before the driver's side rear wheel. get some sort of service manual (Factory, Haynes, Chilton, etc.) to help you. good luck.

I can rotate it by hand ok, how do I determine a "pulse"?
I hear some hissing, is that a pulse?
thanks!
