OH 12a Backfire issue

I did search around to find a answer but got nothing so here it goes, i have a 79 sa22c and its only got 46,xxx miles on it. it ran fine until i tried to experiment with taking off the exhaust and leaving it with just a pre silencer. every time i let off the gas it constantly backfires extremely loud until it reaches idle, i know the loud part is from lack of muffler but it shoots giant blue flames (that's cool and all) but its too much. i can post a vid of it doing it from in the car if needed. Thanks!

i would be curious to know the answer to this one also....is it a timing issue, or a fuel issue? because i have the same problem.

Probably running rich due to lack of back pressure. I would say timing isn't an issue if it started after removal of exhaust. I have had two first gens with modified exhausts that ran great but backfired under deceleration, resulting in the infamous 1st gen flames.

Nope, took them off. all it has is the stock manifold to a presilencer that provides almost no resistance.
