this is where mazda needs to stop

The automaker also featured two other alternatives to the standard internal combustion engine. Next spring, the RX-8 RE powered by a hydrogen-fueled rotary engine will be available for lease. This is six months sooner than originally planned. The Premacy RE, which is a bit further away from production, incorporates a hydrogen rotary engine, offering dual fuel driving with hydrogen and gasoline, in tandem with an electric motor.

what about that new engine that runs off of deasol(sp) fuel? that has a 200:1 compression.. i wasnt sure if mazda was goin to use it.. but i was reading a lil bit on it in a car magizine..

I saw the hydrogen version of the RX-8 while taking the mazda factory tour in Hiroshima. I think it is a good concept and I am for most things that will help our environment...

i think a hydrogen rotary is a great idea.

...why is this in the NE section?

Well, sort of. You are aware that the majority of the electricity used to create hydrogen comes from burning fossil fuels? Anyway, it does reduce overall greenhouse emissions some since the powerplants average less pollution per unit of energy than the average car does.

Well back in 94 they had in the NYC auto show a hydrogen rotary engine in a miata although they said it was a concept car the idea has been floating around within Mazda for a while. I remember them saying that the rotary engine showed promis because it didn't back fire using the hydrogen as oposed to the piston engine which did backfire in test done back in 94. Sounds great to be able to use another source of fuel then you will see a real drop in gas prices. Opec would be dying to shoot the creators of that hydrogen motor lol

thats so last week. Read up a bit about the making of hydrogen, There have been tremendous breakthroughs in the last couple years. Some scientists in canada are perfecting a way to make hydrogen by dropping a metal in water, the reaction causes the hydrogen to split from the oxygen and the metal they are using costs just pennies on the dollar.

Their are lots of other ways they have been trying to get hydrogen. And im all for the switch (pending i can still buy gas for my 7 )

so.. if they can create it for the 8.. do yall think there would be an adaptor to add to the 7's?? simular to the water injection?

And I'm anxiously awaiting these new processes. But until they exist and make major breakthroughs, I fully expect all energy sources used for this will be chosen based on cost. And fossil fuels are the lowest cost, especially in the short term.

Only a small percentage of hydrogen is currently produced directly by electicity, in water electrolysis. Most comes from steam reformation of natural gas (methane). That is of course a fossil fuel also, albeit with a larger domestic supply.

There are many future possibilities of producing hydrogen which are more environmentally friendly with respect to fossil fuels utilisation and greenhouse gas emissions. It is important to move forward with development of hydrogen engines, vehicles, and storage and distribution infrastructure. Other hydrogen production methods will come about if there is demand and very importantly the political will to support research and development investment.

A hydrogen combustion rotary engine has the promise to power something more exciting than a boring hydrogen fuel cell electric car, which seems to be the focus of other auto manufacturers.
