go rx7, tons of fun

and the build is moving along, the weather and lack of a garage is slowing me down but once i get the new rotor housing the engine will be done very soon after, then its off to putting the car back together and diaging what happened since the engine didnt blow

all i can say is im super pumped to get it back

hows your andy? any progress?

oh i almost forgot to mention, the FD has such a prestige, because of its rarity, theres been tons of times were random people have come up to me and gave me the thumbs up or yelled nice car while i was driving past. and the stares you get by all generations of people.

the 8 just doesnt do that, theres still tons of them driving around that have no clue what it is or even that what engine it has

when i choose cars i look for a "package deal" i never choose a car based soley on power or handling.

i love the FD because it looks so sexy and unique, because its like nothing else on the roads, because its fast, it handles amazing, and the looks people give you when you drive by. plus, other then on the forums or when im hanging with everyone from here, the only time i ever saw an FD was by my highschool....

im the only one in my town with one, how many different car owners can say that?

the real question is...what do you want out of the car? both cars have there sets of problems

and i can honestly say, after all ive gone though so far with my FD, driving it always makes it all worth it, i still have no regrets

Still going. I think Im going to go to DGRR so Ihor and Rich have been putting more work into my car to get it ready in time. They pulled the engine, we decided to get a new harness (mine was brittle, which I knew during my original IRP inspection) and replace everything that looks worn. More stuff is being added by me as we go along of course . Newest thing is PLX gauges, I'm deciding on whether to get 2 multi-guages and move my boost gauge to the center or leave the boost gauge on my a-pillar and get 3 multi-gauges. I'm toying with the idea of installing my Type RZ/Spirit R ABS in this round of mods but its probably not going to happen. I have no idea when it will be done hahahah.

I dunno ... its not even the rotary that scares me off about the FD. The thing is that you need to watch your essentials like boost, temp and A/F ratio, and you'll be good. I already drive around with an OBD2 scanner in my civic, and if I didnt take care of it, I dont think I would have ever made it to 215k miles on all original drivetrain (granted about 120 of those were done before I got my hands on it) Also, I am russian, and I dont think there are any other cars in the world that are as unreliable as some of the Russian ones.

I was helping my dad in his garage when I thought that exhaust gases were actually more like fart than waste.

I have had a rotary apart and I am confident I can complete the rebuild.

Finally, I am a reasonable driver and although I do like to have fun, I do not go around redlining my **** and beating on it all day long (esp not if I am running hot and straining my internals already), thats how you get tickets and repair bills, particularly if you are driving a sports car.

What does worry me is the following:

Could I REALLY have to rebuild every 20k miles as I was told at the meet it is common with rx7's or more like 60k - 80k miles.

Age: I am much more worried about this than the engine - DRY ROT - Replacing all the rubber parts in a car is no fun task! I would much rather rebuild and engine, twice

Flimsy connections and electronics -> I don't think I need to clarify this one, I am not friends with wire harnesses.

Basically I hate spending 95% of my time diagnosing a problem and 5% of the time fixing it, but of course this depends on the problem.

However, I am confident that with the help of this forum, common sense, and hopefully you guys, I could keep an FD out of the shop with 90% of the issues that I could have (excluding accidents and major body work/ paints; including engine rebuilds)

I think I'll do the following:

Try to get that black rx8 dude in Ohio to get down to at least 8500, if he wont go that low, I am getting a 7

thanks again for all your advice!

As for the oil guage the stock one is faulty any way...

and as for the speedo.
180 =100 so if your going past 180 it doesn't really matter what it is, cause it illegal...lol

you get used to the sense of speed and know if your doing 60 or more

I still think you can get a better deal on a local rx8

Hey Andy...Dennis ..had to chime in!....I've owned my 93 black Fd since 2002. No major problems!....If you want respect..attention... a relic...a classic sports car. Go with the legendary rx7!....Let's put it this way...no disrespect to rx8 owners...You won't catch Vin Deisel driving an rx8!...lmao!....Like Andy said....do your research save the money...and prep the vehicle!...Remember these cars are going on 15-17 yrs old!...Like Andy said ..if you want the hot chics...go with the FD!....Unless you drop a 3 rotor or 13b onto an rx8!...But Dave you are right. The looks...the rarity...the exclusive club ..your in!...You have to be a passionate person to really want an Fd!...Almost like an obsession!....Hey Andy...i would love to take your gauges from you...along with your Miata steering wheel...and any other goodies your getting rid of.....lol...give me a call....And yes...if you want dude...i will pick you up next tues....lmao

My boost gauge is also my boost controller (AEM truboost)

I have a separate oil p gauge even when I had the old cluster. Yea the stock sender goes bad pretty early so its pretty much a given that any FD thats survived get a new one. Yes the boost is in place of the oil pressure.

People keep saying that but they mess up on the small stuff. You sound like you know what you're doing though.

Its a requirement that you actually redline the car about once every trip to clear some carbon out hahaha.

You seem to be very informed so I doubt that a rebuild every 20k will be needed. If you keep the boost near stock, you can run your engine for a long long time.

If you are worried about replacing gaskets and stuff, just do it as soon as you get the car and don't worry about it for a while. Same thing with the harness. Its not THAAAAT bad. I'd hate to say it but it sounds like money is a big concern for you. If this is true, I would stay away. Rx8 is a great car. If you mod it and find something new, you will be a pioneer. Everyone knows the workings of a 13b-rew. If you get something going on a renesis, that would be awesome.

Thanks for the ride offer. If I manage to get some free time I'll take you up on it man.

I forgot about the wheel. Yeah dude I have 2 extra wheels now. I have to source another air bag though. I'll definitely give you a call some time soon. Its been to long.

^ Rx7club.com....LOL

The problem with the internet is theres never a universal place with cheap parts. 1 site might have cheap parts oneday.. then change on the next.

If your in no rush i would just recommend waiting for a nice deal to come along

Whatever you do, always check with froogle.com as well to make sure you are getting a good price and check with bbb.org to make sure they are an acredited shop. Man if you had an FD I could sell you my suspension. I have tokicos + gc coilovers and stock touring shocks with PF comfort springs to sell .

Stink:
Talking as a previous RX8 owner now FD owner. Id suggest a Rx8 with the intentions to drop some nice mods into it. You can be the next pioneer in power with the Rx8 but with the FD everyone has 300+hp blah blah.

Like you said you dont want to deal with replacing every bushing/harness/etc on the fd and still have issues.

Rx8 you can buy it,drive it, get bored, and then go for high hp/handling combo.
04 05Rx8s have depreciated to a price floor and i don't see them getting cheaper.

FD youll buy it,become a boost addict, refinance your home to build it, and if you can ever let go of it cry your nights once you sell it for pennies to the dollar. Buy the FD if your willing to marry it for life.

Your on the 7club its gonna be biased towards 7
At then end of it Drive both then buy, either way have one ready for DEALS GAP This April. lol

As a current FD owner...i agree. It's a love/hate relationship with the vehicle...Love it in the summer ...hate it in the winter. As with any car not in production...your going to spend money...you'll never get back. I'm planning to sell my FD pretty soon...if it was up to me..i would keep it...but there is no sense in holding onto 2 sports cars( Planning on purchasing a 2011 Nissan GTR). Good luck in your decision....

i cant imagine theres really that much of a difference...i mean...you have to actually be skidding for it to activate to begin with..its not like your going to feel it by taping the pedal
