Trading a car: sales tax when registering?
Anyone know how this works in Virginia? If I were to trade a car straight up for another car or + cash, what would the sales tax be on the car when I go to register it? Would it be based off just the amount of cash exhanged or the fair market value of the vehicle traded in plus the cash?

how we do it in maryland, it may be illegal but the dumb broads at the DMV don't care. I just write in some silly number. when I registered my 88 over a year ago i put in that i bought it for 500. i originally payed 1500 for it. the people at the dmv don't care, they just want to get off of work from the shitty job they do.
if your car is older model like NADA won't show the price for it, then MVA won't care. if you are registering a newer car like 2000 model, you can't put down $500, and expect those guys are stupid. Governments are not fool. if you want to get away with the tax, just notarize it. no trouble.

In maryland it's 7 years. Older then 7 years, a notorized bill of sale isn't necessary, (they take your word on the sale price) if you don't have a notorized bill of sale with the price on it, they go off of the NADA book guide for tax purposes.
500 bucks should work, when i bought my 7 in tennessee a few years back, tried 100, the lasy looked at me like i was crazy, so i aksed her what "should" i write down, and that what she said. Even though i paid 3 gs. I know virginia is a communistwealth, and has crazy rules when it comes to this, but start there and act dumber then the clerk, and you should be good.

there's a box for you to write the amount of money you bought it for, and they take a percent off of that ammount. $500's generally believable for a FC, however fong says, newer cars you probably won't get away with $500.
