Title woes: need some info
Hey guys,
My friend and I bought an '87 RX-7 turbo for parts so we could do a turbo conversion on my friend's RX-7 base model, but we realized it'd be a lot easier just to get the parts car up and running. The only problem is that there is an issue with the title. It's a Maine title, and supposedly the previous, previous owner made errors on the title so that the previous owner couldn't get it registered and get a new MA title. I was just wondering if there are any ways to apply for a new title in MA. For example, I know in RI if a car is older than 10yrs it isn't required to have a title. I bought an MR2 from RI without a title and applied for one. So I was just wondering if there's any way to get a new title. Thanks for any help you can give!

Every state is different i went thru something similar when i bought my car from a guy in VT as they dont require titles up to a certain point either......
Basically my answer is this....if you have a lot of patience and time you can get it registered but you defnitly have to call/go to in person your local DMV they will give you all the information
It took me almost 3 months to get my car titled and registered

I would try to locate the last owner who legally owned the car (basically the person whose name is on the title) and ask him to get you a duplicate title for you. Give him a few bucks for his hassle and pay for the title fee. Duplicate titles in VA are $5.00. Can't be too much in Maine.

Apparently the previous owner completed a notarized affidavit of correction but never mailed it in. I don't know why. I think what happened was that the previous, previous owner wrote his name on the line where the buyer should've been and the previous owner put his name on the line as a lienholder instead of the buyer. So I think if I take this all to the RMV (DMV for everyone else) I can get it sorted out.

yea I had a hard time registering my supra because of the owner fucked up on the title. MA rmv sucks.. the only way to fix it is to get a duplicate.
I also had the title sent to my local insurence agency so i can pick it up from there insted of being sent back to the orginal owner.

If you aren't against working your way around the law a bit, you can simply swap the dash VIN plate. No cop even looks at the VIN if the plates are properly registered with no flags, and if they do it's always the one on the dash.
It's technically illegal, but unless the parts car was reported stolen, it won't even matter if it's VIN is found on the door or somewhere else, because it's logical that you could have bought a door off a different car.
I don't currently own a vehicle in that type of situation, but I've done it on a few occasions, and I've even had cops look one of them over, with no problems at all. Compared to finding someone who probably doesn't care one bit about your dilemma and getting them to get you a duplicate copy and fill it out, it's really about the easiest thing you can do.
