Exclamation Tired of NoVa Traffic? Support the Tysons Tunnel!

I'm sure *anyone* who lives in/around/commutes to NoVa knows how *incredibly horrible* our traffic situation is. In fact, in 2006, the DC Metropolitan area ranked #1 for the Nation's Worst Traffic Jams...worse than LA. In fact, the DC area claimed 3 of the top 15 spots for the Nation's Worst Traffic Jams! The situation is about to take a turn for the worse, as some money-hungry politicians are looking to turn Tysons Corner into the next Georgetown or Old Towne Alexandria. Construction ALONE will make traffic simply come to a complete halt - and that's ignoring the ramifications of what they will be constructing - including over TEN new huge buildings (Where you ask? I have NO idea, cuz God Knows we don't even have enough space for people or cars as it is).

I urge ALL of you to check out http://tysonstunnel.com/ and do what you can to salvage the situation that's about to go from horrible to simply unbearable. And please...pass this on to anyone who is affected. It's about time we take control of our government and make it take care of OUR needs, vs. IT'S wallet.

Can't we just turn fairfax and alexandria into one big 50 lane highway and the rest of it one big shoulder, fire everyone in the fairfax county government and hand over jurisdiction to a federal agency?

I've found it faster to go from Richmond to the NYC area by going an hour and a half out of my way over to rte 81 and taking that up, rather than try to get past the NoVA/DC traffic.
Perhaps we could let in a few terrorists so they could detonate some low yeild nuclear devices and then just pave over the rubble for that 50 lane highway.

Thanks for the link Ramy. I had no idea that this project was in the works.

Holy crap, I think that if an elevated rail was put in a-la some sections of rockville, it would have been OK to put that in -- 30 years ago.

Putting an elevated rail in today would just totally F*** the area up both traffic-wise and ugly-wise. Has anyone pointed out that tunnelling could be done around the clock at whatever-time of day to minimize impact.... you know if they're building an elevated rail, they will do it all during daytime to save money on lights, etc. I guess they'd have to pay workers more at night, but whatever.

I never knew this was going on either. I was incredibly happy when I moved out of that area. My parents are still there doing that commute everyday. I dont know how my dad has done it for 33 years.

Its weird when he talks about us first being in fairfax and alexandria 23 years ago. How his drive was less than 30 minutes and there was half the cars on the road then there are at 1 am on a saturday night. At least Prince William put a stop build on houses after 2009. But then you have everyone south of PW who is still building so it doesnt help in the long run.

I didn't know this was going on either, my Dad commutes to and from Tyson's everyday. It sometimes takes him 45min to 1 1/2 hrs just to leave Tyson's itself.

That's why I take the metro
Don't you think it will increase housing prices in the Fairfax area (especially around the metro)? That might be a good thing for home owners in the area.

Seriously, traffic there has gotten worse every year I have been there (about 30 years).

It is to the point now where you can't leave the house from 6-10 am for morning rush, 11-1 for lunch rush, and 4-8 for evening rush.

If you're reading this and you don't live there... you may think I'm joking. I wish.

I'm gonna get a job working from home hah.

Yea i would still be living in NOVA right now if the commute didn't suck so bad. I commuted from manassas to arlington and dc for 3 years while going to school. That traffic was unbearable.

Even Metro blows...

From Alexandria VA to Greenbelt MD. I can drive and it'll take me 20 minutes without traffic. (Either around the beltway, up 395 through D.C. and on to 295, or across the WW bridge to 295...)

Or I can hop on the Yellow line transfer to the Green Line and it'll take me an hour...

I'd never take it if it weren't free. (I WORK for them and I drive in... That's ******' sad.)

I am so happy I work my 3PM to 11PM schedule. Whenever I work overtime, however,I just crash at the shop and sleep in a storage room.

i wish i could work off-hours.

Guys, this isn't a "lets vent on how bad traffic over here is" thread. I'm hoping to raise awareness of the crazy plans these guys have in store for us, so you guys can visit the website, send a letter to our officials, sign the petition, and spread the word!

News flash, Maryland is not much better !

I travel all over the beltway with my job. I am in and out of DC/NOVA/MD everyday. For me to keep a 7:00am appointment in say Fairfax which is only maybe 30miles from my house I have to leave at 5:30am. If I leave at 6:00 am I wouldn't get there until 8:30. You do the math.

I propose that all government offices (lets face it government employees are a majority of the problem) supply their employees with mass transit to and from work. With government parking rides in specified areas less prone to traffic.

Have you ever noticed how light the traffic is on Government holidays? You want to eleviate the traffic then quit putting people in office who are for tax increases and a large government. It's no wonder that Washington DC has the worst traffic in the nation.

They need a petition to stop building high density developments. When you tear down 3 houses and build 30 on the same .75 acre lot, multiplied by thousands of times or put 500 townhomes + 500 condo units on every plot of grass that used to be farmland 5 years ago without building any new roads, you get NoVA.
