Thinking of moving to Vermont

Thinking of moving to Vermont
Burlington, Vermont to be specific.
I know it's a long shot, because Vermont is notoriously radical liberal, but I was wondering if any 7club guys live up there and could maybe give some advice.
I looked in to a cost of living calculator, and it estimated a 5.1% increased cost of living over my current cost, which is no biggy.
I'm wondering more about how winters and summers are up there, what's the climate like? What's there to do? I'm a very conservative person, but I hold very libertarian ideas, and I hear that libertarians are almost as pominent as socialists up there, so again, will I be able to fit in? I'll be sharing an apartment with my married hippy friends.
Also, does Vermont have state inspection and state emissions testing on OBD-I and older cars?
Most importantly, does anyone know how the IT field is up there? I'd like to take an increase in pay, and probably go in house somewhere if I could..

Winter is usually fairly cold and lots of snow, past few years there has not been much, but I am hoping for some good snow this winter. Summers usually last from late May to early Sept, all depends on the year though. As far as things to do if you like to spend a lot of time outside there is hardly a better place. In the winter snowboarding and snow machining. Fall you have the foliage and hunting. Spring and summer fishing and hiking is great here, and in the summer water sports, there are some nice twisty roads up here for driving the 7. However if you do plan to move here I strongly recommend not driving the 7 in the winter. In my area they put down a **** load of salt, which just destroys rigs if you do not wash them off periodically. There are state inspections here, I have never had my 93 emissions tested, and I think they only do that with cars 95+. The IT field might be a problem, Burlington is the place to be for IT in the state, but it is still not great, and I doubt you will be able to get more money here, it might happen but just saying. I worked in Montpelier for a while doing work on websites, the company ended up firing the whole department and shipping the jobs to India. There are a lot of liberals here; most of them are from out of state. The numbers seem to point to people who are born and raised here and have a few generations here are mostly conservative. With that said, families that have been here for awhile only make up 40% of the population, the other 60% have not been here that long and are mostly liberal.

Hey I'll be up in Burlington VT next weekend for a rally/rallyx. Good dirt roads in the mountain to go tearing around in. The picture you posted looks a lot like Vermont ;P If you move there I think you're required by state law to own a Saab or Subaru though. It's just... their way.

Ponies! I like the less urban parts of New England. Plus you'd be near skiing. However, I've never heard of the IT scene North of Boston being any good.
Relevant to Inspection. No, they don't do OBD-I inspections, only OBD-II.

Well, I don't ski or snowboard, so that much would be lost on me..
I don't mind the rural areas, it's just that I've lived in Lancaster for the past 6 years and have had enough. Too many tourists, too many buggys...farmers driving their tractors down the road, stupid crap like that is starting to get to me.
Ald all else aside, I'm 20 and am looking to uproot and try somewhere else. I was thinking of moving to northern PA, like stroudburg/poconos area, or somewhere out west like socal.
I know IT is booming in SoCal, but the competition is tough and the cost of living is outrageous.
Anyone else want to add to the "thinking of moving to Vermont" penny jar? I'd like to get as many opinions as possible from people who have actually been there(aside of the opinions of my hippy friends who I'd be living with).

If you're relocating because you're bored of where you are and need some excitement, I think Vermont is hardly the place to go, especially considering you're looking for job in IT. Have you considered Northern Virginia? It's not too far from where you are now and the IT industry in D.C. is booming. Housing is pretty expensive here and traffic is pretty terrible, but you can expect to make a lot more here as well, and the area offers everything in terms of social life.

I work in center city philly, I know terrible traffic...and I want to get away from it.
I'm not looking for excitement, I'm looking to get away from the people I know and create new beginnings.
A friend of mine is probably moving to the DC area and I'd hate to infringe like that.
I'm also considering moving to the West Coast. Oregan or Washington...
Anywhere that has few people and fewer police would be great!(not that I dislike the police, I just want to be able to drive fast again)

Well DC area is NOT the place if you dislike speed policing.
Boy I wouldn't want to commute from Lancaster to Philly. A lot of people do it, but then a lot of people are crazy in my mind.
Vermont/NH are very nice states, but the cultural adjustment could be pretty substantial. The northwest is probably a little more similar to what you're used to, but be careful since they also have some expensive cost of living and busy cities.
Have you considered north carolina? Lots of tech stuff there, you don't have to live in/near a city, and you'll be able to enjoy the winters.

Well....
I don't really want to live in DC, too much traffic, to many retards. I might as well move to philly and keep my job at that point.
I'm from Camden, NJ, so acclimating to Lancaster was crazy culture shock for me a few years ago...
And yes, Dave, the commute to Philly sucks hard. I've been run off the road on the turnpike so many times...When I see people trying to enter the highway, I yeild to the left hand lane so they can get in fine..well when there's two people getting in at the same time, without fail the guy in the back almost always shoots over to the far left lane, squeezing me against the barricades...this has happened at least 5 or 6 times and i'm about sick of it.
I'd never live in Ohio. EVER. so enough with that one
Mass is nice, but I'd like to go somewhere with a short winter...

Actually I live 30 miles north of Burlington. Its our biggest city in northern vermont. I dont spend alot of time there but do comute to it for work. Where I live it looks like the picture you posted with the farms(without the horses) but thats what I like about vermont. We do get some cold weather here but the snow has been pretty minimal the last few years. Overall I think theres a pretty good balance here. Good luck

I was gonna come to jersey but you said you're from camden. Although northern jersey is not bad but it is expensive since its close to NYC. Anything close to NYC is gonna be expensive.
How about a nice area in VA or MA. Those are some areas.
I really cant see myself move away from where im at. Maybe a couple of miles into the next city or so but never to another state. At least not right now. Im too adapted here.
