Question Shock Dyno in Northern Virginia?

Looking for a local shock dyno in the northern Virginia area. I found one place in Fairfax called IMA Motorsports, but they are kinda pricey ($75 per shock, plus any cost to make a mounting fixture).

Would be awesome if I could find a racer/enthusiast in the area with their own dyno. If they had a fixture for the FD upper mount, that would be even better...

Where's a shock dyno? I'm in need of one to balance out my Koni's.

I sure haven't found anywhere that will do $10 a shock. I wish Howard still had his dyno.

I just talked to Koni, and they want $20 per run. To get a min/med/max plot, it's $60 per shock. That's cheaper than the local place, but with shipping it ends up being about the same.

Anyone know somebody with a dyno?

I'm curious to know if there is a cheap dyno available as well. I keep going through dampers on my rallyx car but no way to tell for certain which are blown at any given time and which aren't.

Check out piper motorsports in sterling they might have one. They do a lot of race prep and fabrication, and if they don't they might know somewhere that does. PiperMotorsports.com (703) 996-0353

I actually checked with Piper and RP first, neither have a shock dyno. Piper couldn't even think of a local shop that had one.

I just talked to a place in Jessup MD called Turbo Performance Center (Porsche shop that runs a Rolex series team), and they wanted $125 per shock!

I'm waiting to hear back from a place in Winchester that I was referred to by a couple local race shops. They're supposedly "reasonable" - I'll report back.

Hey DigDug,

From this post: https://www.rx7club.com/ne-rx-7-forum-30/local-shops-test-out-inspect-coilovers-nova-490084/

Jay-Dee Supply Co.

I spoke w/ Bob from the shop, and he said as long as the coilovers have 1/2" hiems (spelling?) on each end, he can test them for $15 a shock. I have NO IDEA what hiems are lol. Do FD coilovers have 1/2" hiems on each end??

so, if the ends of your shocks look somewhat like the following pic, you are good to go.

I use the guys at IMA and they are all great techs. However, their pricing is a tad high.

Thanks for the heads up. I tried calling them, but they're not answering and they don't have voicemail. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Unfortunately my shocks don't have heim joints - they're stock-mount FD coilovers, so it's a post at the top and eyelet at the bottom. If Jay-Dee is willing to fabricate a fixture for their rig, as long as it's not too expensive, it may be worth it. Did they say how many runs they would do on each shock for $15?

I honestly couldn't tell you. If you check the thread date, it was 2 years ago... I recall something in the convo about a computer plot too... Sorry so vague, but that's as good as my memory gets hehe

Good call. I just talked to them and they're willing to dyno my shocks. I have to send them the diameter/pitch of the post threads and overall lengths, but he said he probably has the hardware to mount them. $10 per shock is the best I've found by a big margin. Shipping is sorta costly though.

Have you personally used these guys? If so, do you have any plots of your shocks?

BTW the guy in Winchester that I was referred to, it turns out he went to work for the GM factory Vette team, so he's no longer an option.

Thumbs up

I found another shop in NOVA (Sterling just off 606) with a shock dyno. It's called RRT, here's their website:

http://www.rrtsuspension.com/

It's a BMW-oriented shop, but the suspension side deals with any components of any make. They have a Roehrig dyno and spring rate tester, and even a swaybar rate tester - I'm thinking about getting my Tripoint bar tested for the hell of it. Prices are reasonable, far better than IMA Motorsports.

I got my shocks dynoed at RRT instead of shipping them out to the place in NJ. They charged me $150 for the set, 3 plots each (full soft, medium, full stiff). They made a fixture for the front shock lower mounts at no cost. Best part is they're near me, so no shipping cost and I got to sit down with them and go over the results. I have more data than I know what to do with as they gave me the data files, so I can open them in Roehrig Shock and do whatever I want with it. Way more info than just getting a printed FV graph.

I'm very happy with the service and highly recommend to anyone in NOVA/DC/MD looking to analyze shocks. These guys know their stuff and are willing to explain the results in a lot of detail, which makes this more useful for people who don't have a background in shock analysis.
