seeking best RX-7 mechanic in New England for 2nd opinion
Mechanics at 128 Mazda in Wakefield, MA have looked at my 1994 RX-7 and have determined that the smoking I have experienced is caused by an oil leak in the rear engine seal that is very difficult to fix - something about running the risk of having a gear drop into the engine during the procedure...Anyway, they have indicated that it holds a 50/50 success rate. If it goes well it will be about a $1,000 job...If it fails, I need a new aftermarket engine that will cost me abput $6,000
I would like a second opinion or perhaps to speak to someone who has had this type of work done before...Furthermore, I would appreciate it if any one could fd me some names of mechanics in the NE that have substantial experience working with these cars and perhaps have successfully worked a job this like...I love this car and want to hold onto it if at all possible.
Thank You,
Jeff

You have to completely pull the engine and open it up to replace an oil seal..you CAN NOT do it with the engine in the car, unless you are some mass space magic maker(wtf?). Pulling oil seals..there are no GEARS there to drop, its just oil seals all wrapped around. Watch a rebuild video to see what I mean, but eh, this guy is lying to you. Go to another shop.
Call Barry at BPR in Salem. He's an FD owner and a great mechanic. He'll tell you what your best options are and he can do just about any work you need done at his shop. Recommended based on my own experiences with him along with others. Every time I'm there there's a couple other FDs in the shop. Good luck with your actual problem too.

What kind of BULLSHIT is that?! A rear main seal is easily done and almost no chance of damaging your engine unless your a 1st grader. I can't believe these guys are ASE certified. Pull the tranny and clutch. In ya go!
