New FD owner

I just wanted to say Hi! I picked up an FD last Saturday as a replacement for my WRX track toy.

The WRX will be sold as soon as its back to stock. Its been a great car. I bought it new three years ago and I've put 75k miles on it. I've done the eqivalent of 24 track days (6 two day events with a co-driver) and never had a hic-up. Orig. motor, trans and clutch. I added a bigger turbo and supporting mods and ran 20psi all day. I hope I'm as fortunate with the RX-7.

7UP, sorry to hear about your friends car. I will be sure to get a good fire extinguisher!

The previous owner took very good care of it. No aftermarket parts at all. All OEM replacements, right down to the new tires.

GTI337, I almost traded my WRX in on a 337. I bought the WRX in Dec of the year it came out and hadn't even given a thought about buying one. I figured I wouldn't be able to get one since they were so rare. Then I saw two used 337s sitting on a dealers lot. But the trade didn't make sense financially. I had a MK4 GTi VR6 GLX before the WRX. They're great cars, as long as you get a German one.

Zumspd, do you have a lot of experience with these cars? This is my first rotary, but I'm a tech at a small independent shop in Weston and I don't think this car will be a problem compared to what I have to deal with on a daily basis.

Congrats, she looks like a great car

Unless you have records of recent maintenance, I recommend a full tuneup---plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil change, pcv. as a matter of fact, ray crowe at malloy mazda (888 533 3400) has a sale right now, selling a complete tuneup kit including all I listed for $131 shipped.

Also, the 'starting/reliability' mods include a downpipe to replace the stock pre-cat, an aluminum AST (air seperator tank), and a boost gauge and coolant temp gauge.

Best of luck with it, if you were closer to NJ I'd be glad to help you out!

Rich, I'll be doing more than a just a tune up before I put it on the road. It needs a little track prep too. I'm in a tough spot picking my class for road racing since it seems like the RX7 gets more reliable the more you mod! I'll probably run in Street Touring, which allows unlimited wheels/tires/suspension, an intake, exhaust and ECU reflash with stock boost.

Yeah, Shaun, I live near ******. I guess these cars attract a lot of attention. Stop in if you see me outside or working in the garage.

haha. shaun and i used to go out for coffees all the time. back in the good ol days when my FD would actually be driveable. :*( if you ever want to meet up though, let me know. always up for a beer or coffee or dinner or whatever. im thinking about auto-xing my fd as well. im definatly going to a school that SCCA is setting up in NH for auto x and depending on if i like it or not im going to compete. i have a lot of mods on my car though, which i think will bump me into a faster class, so if i do try to be competitive im only gonna get my *** handed to me. let me know about getting togeter, and if you want to go to F1 on boston, we can me up before we head .Rick

Rick, no need to go to the school, just show up to an event and ask for an instructor. Thats the best way to find out if its something you want to do. Go to the school if you've decided you want to be more compeditive. You also have to be an SCCA member to sign up for the school. You don't have to be a member to do an event. I've been autocrossing for three years and road racing for two.

You're better off with mods so you're not in Super Stock. You'd get your *** handed to you in Super Stock against the Z06's with race rubber. You're better off in Street Mod 2. Thats the class you'd be in if you have added or changed boost or the way its controlled. Turbo'd Miatas would be your toughest competition in that class.

I dont' plan on doing many autocrosses at all this year. I'm focusing on road racing with COM. Its more seat time per dollar and far more fun.
