well did i mention that i am going to be starting the painting process on my wheels next weekend? and did I also mention that when you take wheels to have the tires dismounted, specify to take extra care with not damaging them? i took mine to NTB in shrewsbury and they managed to sheer off one of my valve stems.. don't ask me how because i don't even have a clue how you manage that one.

I've had a shop damage a valve stem before. I don't know how they do it either, but heres the long story.

My track tires were looking a little beat before an event last summer. I knew I wasn't going to make it all weekend so I packed an extra set. I had a Walmart supercenter swap out the tires after the first day on track. I set all the pressures after they mounted them. I put the wheels on the car the next morning and went out for the first session. The car was very very loose and I knew I had a problem after the first lap. Checked all the pressures and one of them was 15psi low! The shop had damaged a valve stem and I was in the middle of nowhere. The walmart was an easy 45 minute drive from the track. I ran around the paddock and found a new valve stem. Now the challenge was getting the tire off the bead and putting in the new stem. My brother and I pried and hammered and did everything we could to get that tire off, but it was damn near impossible. Then we figured it out. We put the tire in between a jack and the bottom lip of my friends huge two car trailer. Jacked it up and then it popped right off. I threw in the new stem and I was back out on track 10 minutes later. Thats the crazy stuff my brother and I do when we go to the track. Stressful and frantic, but a great sense of accomplishment when you figure out the fix.

And as for those wheels, definitely Mini Lites. This is my mothers weekend toy with its 10" Mini Lites and 165/45/10 Yokohama sports tires. Super fun.

I'll tell my mom you said so.

I'll be making a lot of progress this week. I have been waiting quite a while for some parts and they're starting to trickle in. I have the STi taken apart and sitting in a million pieces in the garage. I'll have that rolling tomorrow and get the RX7 back into the garage.

There you go. The motor is out and we're doing a 2.4 liter stroker. We've also upgraded to the shorter JDM 5th and 6th gears. Lots of other little things too. Stripped out more of the wiring harness and replaced all the sheathing and electrical tape with heat shrink. Tonnes more to do, but its a start.

Thanks man. The guys at DSG had some serious man hours into all the custom stuff. Some of it was a little overboard and made the car a lot harder to work on. We're trying to simplify a lot of it before we hit the track in the spring.

Paddy and I co-drive the car. We have a friend who was on the crew for the Subaru road race team last year. So we pulled up next to their rig at VIR and met everyone (including Tarzan). Kristian Skavnes, one of the pro drivers, drove the car in one of the Time Attack sessions at GT Live. Subaru flew Tarzan over for the event and he was under contract to drive any Subaru that was in the Pro class at the request of the owner. We heard that he was a ruthless driver and had no mechanical sympathy, so we weren't going to let him drive. Tarzan seemed like a cool guy, but you could tell that the language barrier was a problem and he felt out of place. Kristian and the rest of the guys were a blast to hang out with.

Let's talk about the goals for our cars:

I have an 89 Turbo. Mods in sig. After I put everything on, I'm HOPING for low to mid 14s.
My goal for the car is 300 whp or 12.999. Whichever happens first. I'd say that is pretty reasonable.

My next step is a fcd, boost controller, secondary injectors, and a tune. I'm hoping that will get me into the upper 200s whp.

Once I reach my 12.999 I think I'll put coilovers on it and than be done. Of course, I say that NOW.

Anybody else care to share?

My goal for the car i'm buying(hopefully i will be able to pick it up tomorrow)

Its and 88 turbo, with a street ported motor. It has a series 5 turbo(which needs a rebuild) . the car also has a Bonez intake, 3 inch downpipe , borla dual exhaust, safc, ap/ps delete, a walbro fuel pump, and an FCD. The car is coming with 890cc secondaries which arent installed yet, and an act street performance clutch also not installed.

I plan to buy a wideband and boost controller, install the injectors and tune the safc, and probably buy some rb sway bars and install the energy bushing kit i have. And i've been thinking about doing a v-mount intercooler setup.
My goal for this year is around high 200's also.
next year i plan to do suspension if i can afford to.
Eventualy i'd like to get a bnr stage 3 turbo and some sort of ems(probably mega squirt).

on a side note, has anybody heard anything about the synchronic BOV? i was just reading about it and watched a video of it. it seems pretty interesting.

i don't like the synchronic because there comparison add was absolute BS. I watched the video when it first came out and they compared it to the HKS SSQV saying that the ssqv didn't open up blah blah blah. the thing was, they didn't even have the ssqv hooked up to a charge pipe ( i wonder why it wasn't working? ).

well anyway, plans for my car...

get a lot of the spare parts on the car that have been sitting around.

the wheels
Apexi GT spec exhaust
Greddy Type S BOV (to replace that blitz thing)

still trying to sell the PFC but once that is gone it's going to be microtech this summer. I'm probably going to pull the engine and clean up the engine bay a little. get rid of the unnecessary thing. do the wiring harness and put it all back together in an organized and not cluttered fashion, something Mazda couldn't do lol. also going to replace some of the mounts (engine, tranny, diff). then get it tuned and just drive it. I have been looking into turbo upgrades a little bit but I think i'm going to have to wait on that until after the standalone is complete. i just want to get something that can flow more exhaust gases, i really don't want to raise the boost much. I don't have any specific power goals right now, just want to make it reliable and clean. I think the car is plenty quick for now.

thats awesome pete! i am utterly in love with your STi . please let me know when you make it out to Lime Rock, as that is the closest track to me (even though it is still somewhat far away.) id love to come check the car out and see you guys out on the track. please tell Paddy that me going to Isenberg was one of the best decisions i have made in my scholastic career and i am loving it here. awesome program. great recommendation.

good luck with your race season. any chance i can give you a call next time i am home to swing by check out the FD and shoot the ****?

on a sidenote- i think i am slowly talking my girlfriend into co-driving my car at some autocross events this season. i am looking at it as a way for us to bond and as a way for her to get more familiar and a better understanding of my passion. i dont think she fully understands it. she drove my car when it was stock five years ago and hasnt driven it since. it is now a whole new monster, so it will take sometime for me to train her in how to drive it and what to expect. no one but me drives my car, so she should take this as me being very, VERY trusting; as i am putting the other love of my life into her hands. i just hope i dont regret it in the future...

i seriously made a proposition for her to come to Wales with me later on this year to go to Rally Great Britain and she didnt understand. she had a bunch of questions as to what we would do and i think she got bummed when i told her we would be driving from stage to stage and checking out the events that go along with it. she has traveled all over Europe and loves traveling. i just dont think she understood why i would just focus on checking out the rally event. uuuuuck. hopefully she comes to some autocross events and races with me.

does anyone have any advice for how to get my girlfriend more into what i do? i dont want this to be a problem when/if we get married and share money and i spend immense amounts of money into my passion and she wont understand. that sounds like it could lead to unfortunate events. i am hoping now that if i plant the seed she will get a better understanding and maybe even an appreciation for the motorsport world and what and why i do what i do. bless her heart, she tries. i just dont think she really understands.

i feel like i just wrote a letter to one of those help sections in the newspapers . like i should end my writing with sincerely, the confused racer

edit* maybe ill start a new thread so i can get more feedback.

hahaha Rick. You and Heidi (is that how you spell it?) are a good match. just takes some time for people to realize someone else's passion. I'm sure she knows that you are sooooooo passionate about cars and racing, but I think until she experiences it she might not get it fully. I think her autoXing would be really good. and like you said, noone drives your car, so that should mean something to her if she knows you well enough (5 years, she knows you). take her to more race days too. i'm probably not the expert on this but just keep trying. I think once she finds out how fun autoX is, she'll be enlightened!

thanks christian. i have actually been with her since we were 15 (so 8 years with a 2 year break.) she most certainly knows my passion. and yes that is how spell her name. you met her at an autocross event, right? she has come to a couple autocross events and i just took her to a rallycross event. she didnt complain but i am not sure she really had fun. watch this bite me in the *** when she starts bringing in better times then me. id be proud and shed never let me live it down. thanks for your advice.

Pete- i was just flipping through my January 2008 issue of Modified Magazine and guess what i found? I am flipping through the pages until i come to the GT Live Virginia event (page 122.) i start looking at the pictures and i see an STi that looks awfully familiar. I can make out the red letters on the car- "ALTY." McParland Realty! no s***! thats awesome and very funny, cause i was just reading about your recollections from the event. that picture looks more like a picture from a rallycross event . who was driving and what happened?

i most likely wont be at all of the autocrosses, but ill try to be at as many as i can go to. i wish i could be done with autocrossing, but that wont happen until i can afford to do track days. im just kidding- well for the most part. autocrossing is fun, i just wish there was more seat time.

I would imagine that if you brought your girlfriend to more car stuff and she gets to understand a little bit more about cars she would probably understand why you like it so much. My ex girlfriend used to come to my bike races sometimes, and she kinda developed an understanding of why i was so into it, i actually got her to do a mountain bike race too. The new girl i'm dating will definetly be up for doing some scenic cruise kinda driving(she does like it when i drive kinda quickly), but i don't know that she would be into going to the track or anything, may take time.

OH YEAH! the reason i was originally posting! I'm going to pick up my car tomorrow! all i have left is finding a ride down early(i have a date at night, they couldnt have picked a diferent day for valentines day? had to pick a day that i was going to get my car....)
