Maryland JDM Questions

Are there any FD owners who drive a Japanese model. I just want to know what was needed or required to drive one in Maryland. I know there are ways to get them legal because I know someone who has had a S15 in the states for over a year now. Anything would be great full!

i met a guy with a blue S15 in md, its registered as an S13 though after a year of fighting with the DMV to try to registered it with the converted florida title. I also knew a guy with an R32, i think it was also titled as an S13 and he drove on dealer plates.

Hmm, I'm pretty much deciding on a JDM 3rd gen rx7 or a s15 but I just wanna know where I can pick one up or see one. It has to be U.S. registered or I wont consider it. If anyone knows that would be awesome!

1. You can't register it here legally. It has to go through our crash tests and emssions.
2. Theres no difference between the American version and Japan version except emissions.
3. The JDM reference in the RX7 community is silly. The only people worried about that are honda civic people.

Are you sure about that? I though the headlights on a S15, bumper supports, and window glass needed to be replaced to pass the crash tests.....also if thats true then why is the modes in the U.S. heavier then the original Japanese model? It cant be just the fact that theres a few more sensors... The JDM reference in the Rx7 community isn't a bad thing.....Honda civic people? If you have a grudge about another make then please don't complain.....its just a car to move the majority of people from point A to point B. I would Like an Imported vehicle because its unique and not as old but if It wont happen then it wont. I understand that it wont be legal thats why people get them registered in Florida then ship them out from there so they are legally registered. I have been told that Florida accepts any vehicles as long as they are transported correctly and have been inspected for exotic materials and such...(bugs, dirt or something weird like that). Has anyone gotten a Imported vehicle?

A good friend of mine had a R33Skyline GTR and he had to lie and register it as something else. Eventually the place that imported them, Motorrex, was shut down for doing things shady to get them registered. But they had purchaed 15 skylines for crash testting. Unless your willing to purchase 15 of them, put the extra turn signals on and emissions equipment, knock yourself out. And the ONLY difference is emissions. Just curious, how old are you? Im gonna guess very young.

another thing is that if you're planning to get a 96+ anything it would have to be OBD2 which no FDs or S15s were. There is your emissions difference. The guy i met with the S15 said he bought it with the florida title and it took him about a year to get it on the road in MD because the VIN on the title didn't have enough digits. the MVA would not issue registration because of this, he had to title it as something else (s13). Its seriously not practical or really worth it in any way.

JDM cars are totally legal in the US if you do everything by the book.
1. the car must originally come through a licensed importer.
2. the car must be properly titled as a kit car
3. the car must be inspected by a legal facility- in NJ there is one in morristown
4. you must carry around the bill of sale in the glove box and present it to
any police officer or law official that pulls you over (if they ask for it)

I own a 1991 Nissan Silvia S13
If anyone needs the contact info of my friends who are registered with US Customs as licensed importers, email me.

aetoyota86@optonline.net
it takes about 3 months to get the kit car title after completing the sale. (at least in my case) cuz US Customs is totally back-logged on paperwork.

On that note, I "own" a 1989 Nissan 240 coupe. Of course the pieces of it I still own happen to be 3 pieces of metal. If you get the hint... I was saving that in case my S13 wasn't legal, but it was fine.
