Maryland guys!
does anyone have an S4 TII Differential lying around? I need a pair of stub shafts. they're what the half shafts bolt onto...
look like this:

^ as you can see... S5 ones are retarded

Hey man congrats and welcome! We generally get together monthly at Fuddruckers in Columbia, look for the thread announcments here and on the NE section of the forum. There's great info and nice folks on here.
does anyone have a set of Trailing coil packs for a 1990 vert? I think i found out why i can't set the timing and why my car is smoking so much. My Trailing Coils aren't firing so its leaving unburned fuel in the engine and i think its because they are bad. do they sell aftermarket coil packs???

I know there is a vert at Petry's in Westminster but i havent check to see if it has the coils in it...btw does anyone know if the Coil packs are the same from 86-91??
See you around sometime -- I drive a blue 3rd gen with 99 spec tail lights. I live in North Bethesda... I don't really know if there are many meets in Rockville area anymore, so I ended up going to the Dulles ones a lot.

But I doubt your coils are bad, the connector or the signal is probably where you should check first.
Does anyone know where I can Learn/read more on setting up a fuel system? such as what a surge tank does, and other misc related things. OH! and how coils, dizzy and the whole timing thing work with each other

When you take a turn, notice how the fuel gauge moves up and down...
That's your fuel sliding to one side of the tank.
What do you think happens when you're just a little low on fuel and it sucks up air? Your engine will stumble at best... If you're running enough boost and advanced timing, you can lean out enough to damage the engine by detonation.
You put the surge tank up in the engine bay and it always stays full. A low pressure pump feeds from your main tank to the surge tank. A high pressure pump feeds your injectors from the surge tank.
Carbureted cars do not usually need the surge tank, as the float bowls serve that purpose.
On to ignition:
The thing to know about coils is that they resist changes in the flow of current, that is, if you have a quickly changing electrical current, it will attempt to stop current flowing when it first starts, and keep it flowing when it first starts...
AC adapters for your laptop and other small household electronics typically contain a transformer (Which consists of coiled wire). Unplug it or plug it in to the wall and you may notice a spark. That's the coil trying to resist the flow of current in and trying to keep it going when you pull it out.
It's also why you use coils in speaker crossovers... You want to block high frequency sounds (High frequency means it changes very many times per second... Times per second = Hertz - Abbreviated "Hz")
Anyway, let's put this concept into your first gen RX-7. I assume you still have that one that I towed for you from BigPimpin's house...
So the distributor is attached into the front cover of the engine and has a gear to spin it off of the eccentric shaft.
In the bottom of the distributor is the reluctor and some magnetic pickups. The reluctor is just a metal wheel with some teeth on it. The magnetic pickups are like little metal detectors, they send out a signal whenever the teeth on the reluctor pass nearby.
On the sides of the distributor are two ignitors, marked "J-109" I believe Jeff20B has a drawing of one as his avatar.
These work like little amplifiers to make that signal stronger.
In the old days, the ignitor, reluctor, and magnetic pickup weren't there. It was called points. (The 1979 RX-7 uses points) The points were just like a regular switch that would switch on and off every time the distributor spun around... The switch would eventually fail or would become very loose and timing would be inaccurate. This is why the newer electronic ignition system was designed.)
That signal is fed to the coils.
So you have this changing signal going to the coils, while the current is on, the coil charges up. This is called Dwell time. When the current goes off, the coils want to keep the current flowing through them. They discharge this current through the spark plug.
The top part of the distributor contains the rotor and cap. These just direct the spark to the proper plug. You can remove the cap and rotor by hand (Cap is held on with little clips. Rotor pulls straight off. You can see the reluctor and magnetic pickups unter a metal protection plate that comes off after you pull the rotor.
On Timing:
Go to the playground and sit on the swings... Remember how as a kid you could get the swing going pretty high? You'd put your legs out and pull the chains towards you at just the right time to go forwards, then pull your legs in and push on the chains to go backwards, again, right at the top of your swing. Do it wrong and you dind't go too high...
Timing is just as critical in an engine: Fire off the gas too late and all your energy goes out the exhaust port. Fire it off too early and you fight the forward motion of the engine.
Watch the animations at www.rotaryengineillustrated.com and you'll see the combustion chamber take in air/fuel mix, then get smaller (Compression) as it comes by the spark plugs it'll be right at it's smallest. This is called "Top Dead Center" Once it passes the spark plugs, it'll get larger for the burning fuel to expand (Power/Combustion). Once it passes the exhaust port to release the spent fuel, it starts over again.
Proper ignition timing is right around TDC, maybe a few degrees before or after.
Hope that helps.
Long time no see people.. just droppin by to say happy holidays..

If your tachometer on the dash is working, the trailing ignitor is at least getting a signal from the ECU though.

yeah... the other day I drove around with the leading coils disconnected accidentally
it was fine, didn't smoke at all...
have you checked your intercooler for oil yet?

Happy new year people.. I took a trip up to NYC.. .. It was pretty cold!!! anyway i'm serious about gettin the car back up and running.. funds are building up slowly for the fix.. i need breaks all the way around, new calipers just to make the car stop.. since the car starts.. :-D..
Anyone good with getting Flags taken off your car?..
