Poits vary by state, but if you stop by your local department of motor vehicles, they should have a little broshure that tells you...

But normally its broken down by speed like 1-9 over is 3pt, 10-19 is 4pt, 20+ reckless and is 5-6pts, general speeding is 3pt, running a stop sign, or violation of any of those small things and such will get you 3pt, defective equipment and no reg, tags, improper crap on the car and so on is a no point and fine only...

^^^^this stuff varies by state, but should give you an idea of the point system^^^^

and normally a driver starts out with a -5, and can take driver improvement class that can get you 3pt back, but you could only take the class once every 2 years...might vary by state...

Hope this helps...

No secret; I just do my homework. I read up on the various laws that pertain to my case, and under the Freedom of Information Act, you can also go to your local Police Academy and review the policies & procedures the Officers must adhere to when issuing the citation in question. That, coupled with learing a LOT from the local Prosecutor have given me a much better understanding of the court system, what will and won't be accepted, what to fight and where to fight it (general vs district court etc), etc etc. As you can see, it's not something that you can just wing it etc; practice makes perfect. And unfortunately, I've had PLENTY of practice hehe.

The bottom line is, the system is skewed GREATY in favor of the Officer. You need to arm yourself to the teeth - with information - in order to level the playing field a bit. And sometimes that's not even enough, which is when you must know when and how to plead with the Prosecutor/DA, and sometimes even the cop!

also, how can you get multiple licences??? i thought they would prevent against you doing that.
You can't. Not at the same time, at least. I don't think there's anything in place (at least pre-9/11) to prevent you from being ABLE to get multiple licenses at one time, although it's illegal. Post 9/11, I've heard the DMVs were linked via a database, so it's probable that you can't, even if you lied and tried.

In my case, I'm originally a VA resident, I surrendered my VA license and got a PA license. Then I fudged that license up pretty good (one ticket landed me 5 points, and suspension occurs at 6), so I handed it back, and drove down to VA to get a VA license. So I never had more than one license at a time. But you also gotta be careful and see which states transfer points, and which don't. VA will report everything and take everything

VA no longer has 2 or 5 point violations. Only 3, 4, and 6 point violations. http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/c...nts_assess.asp

Also, while some things like defective equipment and expired registration do not assign you any points as per the DMV, your insurance company can and usually WILL assign you points and a concomitant premium increase based on these non-motion violations. What a load of crap, huh?

No, you normally start out with zero. For every year w/o violations, you gain +2 points. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the maximum + points you can have in VA is +5. And the Driver Improvement Course gives you 5 positive points, not 3. They changed that as well. I know, because I had -11, took the course, and ended up w/ -6. Then I argued w/ the DMV over a ticket they transferred wrong from PA, despite all the info I provided them with MONTHS ago. Got the extra (wrong) point removed, so I went up to -5, but I bitched and moaned about how it took incredibly long (almost 2 years), and my insurance rates have been affected by this as well, etc, so I had yet ANOTHER point taken off (lol), so I'm sitting pretty at -4 right now. Not too bad. After a year of disciplined driving, I'll be at -2, and one more year, I'll get another 2 points so I'll be at zero, at which point I'll take the Driver Improvement Course again, and be back at +5 Damn I'm good hehe

Some cops have very nice cars themselves. I had one pull me over and let me off easy, when I was facing at least FIVE violations at that very second. He kept complimenting my FD, and told me about the 'Stang he has that's putting down X amount of hp, etc. Naturally, because he was so nice, I called in, and had his Captain give him a commendation. You should definitely give praise where praise is due, given how RARE it's earned.

While that seems to be the case most of the time, your age has a lot to do with it as well There definitely are some good cops out there. I just don't think they live in Fairfax County LOL.

You'll quickly find that the only nice cops you run into, will be the ones that are not currently engaged in chasing you down to write you a ticket/haul your *** to jail.

It's the sad truth.

pick a number around twenty, i think, who knows, drove pizza delivery for 12 years, so they were like toilet paper to me! Also knowing the judge helped on more then a few times(sad when he knows you through court appreances) so many driver improvement courses that the lead instuctor knew me by first name and had a few beers with at UT football games. In louisville, got so many letters from lawyers to kick them down to improper equipment, thats what i did, since it was cheaper then fines, and they never went on records. BUT in communistwealth of virginia, never had more trouble, pulled over for accelerating to fast, no ticket didnt break traction or speed limit, boy did that make him mad! 52 in 35, in a speed trap at 5 am, just after droped from from a 45, pulled over for being a suspect in a robbery, cause i had a blue car and a navy uniform on, dont know what that cop was on, but it must have been good. thats all i can remember for now!

yea i know cops in VA are the WORST. my 80 in a 45 i was just amazed i got off. I was actually in a big hurry and was weaving in and out of traffic on route 40, and kind of cut the cop off because he was undercover in a chevy tahoe, he starts tailing me and im thinking what an ******* then all of a sudden he throws on his lights. He seemed pretty cool and since it was my first time gettin pulled over he said he would let me off with a warning. Being very polite and cooperative can go a long way, but usually it all depends on whos pulling you over

I have driven for over 20 years and never got a ticket , untill I got my FD.

Ok, my horror story. Three tickets in 40 days

42 in a 35 in Fairfax
65 in a 55 on rt 7 in Sterling (people were flying past me)
Reckless on rt 7 - Cut off by a SUV went on the side of the road to avoid hitting her. I didnt even pass the SUV. I had to kiss some *** to have it taken down to a "illegal lane change"

Almost forgot my illegal exhaust ticket in Leesburg, and it does show up as points for my insurance carrier.

No tickets in two years, could be the FD was down
