FB or FC?
FB or FC?
Hey guys i am fairly new to the forum as far as being a member goes, but i have been looking up info on rx7s on rx7 club for a while now. I have decided to post in the NE section because i live in north jersey and couldnt find a better place for this. i have saved up enough money for either an FB or an FC as my first car. My only question to you guys is your input on which one you prefer and why. I am trying to find the best daily driver that i can mildy modify and still have a reliable and fun car. I have heard a few different opinions but i am still not sure which car is right for me. So please, post your personal experiences with your fc or fb so that i can find the best rx7 for me.
Thanks in advance, Matt

I dunno, I would say get a first gen, just because I have one. There's nothing else like it. IMO, 2nd gens look WAY to similar to 944's, and lack in character.
But I suggest that you take a drive in each, and see which one is right for you. I love my 79, and hope to never get rid of it.
btw, it's my first car too, and I do drive it just about every day.

i, personally, would get something like a Corolla(or an equal-level grocery getter) for a first car...because 9 times out of 10, the reliability of said Corolla is unmatched.
a rotary would probably need a rebuild, particularly if you're buying a cheap one...so you'd be looking at dropping a few grand into it.
quick question: how old are you, and how long have you been driving?

I'm only sixteen and i have been saving up since i was 14 with my mind set on getting a 7, possibly an fc. I have been prepared to buy the car and have money left over for repairs and mods. I already know how bad rotaries can be but its all about taking good care of the car. and i have mechanics in the family so ill be ok. Im gettin a 7 theres no queston about that been wanting one since i was like 12. I just need to figure out if i want a fb or fc.
so you're JUST getting your license and intend to drive an RX7...
well, for the sake of playing the devil's advocate, i'll say this: don't get one, or the likelihood is you WILL crash it. get something cheap that you won't care about if you're learning how to drive...then get the car you actually want once you've figured out the basics a year or two down the road.

I am going to argue with a few of these comments. First off, rotaries can be nearly perfectly reliable and nearly trouble free. Do you think they would still make rotaries if they were that bad? Second, I bought my FB from my father for $500, cheap, and not because it was from my dad. No family discount there... 123k miles, sat for years, but wasn't too bad. I sold it 3 months ago after having it for a bit less than a year, and the engine was strong as hell. I have since bought an FC for 1700, with a brand new engine... they don't always need a rebuild. Get an Rx-7 if you want it... you won't regret it, but just drive responsible. Please, as you don't see a large amount of Rx7s on the road.
Treat a rotary like you love it, and it'll love you.

for your first car I would probably get the FB. it's lighter and not as fast so it'll be more forgiving to an un-experienced driver. I have a turbo II FC and if I had gotten it as my first car like I wanted to, I would probably already be dead
I say get the FB, you'll have lots of fun with it, carburated rx-7s are more reliable in my opinion. and they're cheaper, so you have more money for mods/upkeep.
EDIT: also, just for the record, I don't really recomend getting an rx-7 for your first car either. I have a corolla I drive everyday. (89 SR5 coupe, I actually really like it. some times I miss it when I'm driving my rx-7 lol. there is just something about a slow car that wieghs nothing that you don't mind beating the crap out of. I bought it for $600 haha)

I wrecked my RX-7 a year after I got my license. It sucked.
I too recommend getting something other that the RX-7 (Or in addition to the RX-7) until you learn better car control.

I still vote for the rx7, mainly a first gen. I bought mine for $500 when I turned 15, and restored the body, fixed the rust and painted it until I was ready to drive, at 16. Right now, actually, I'm rebuilding the engine, which yes, does cost money, but it's great fun and you will learn A LOT from it.
After putting all this work into my car, I am very careful with it. You just can't drive like all the other teenagers out there. Don't streetrace it, don't be a showoff, and treat it like you really really LOVE it and it will be an absolutely great first car. As for gas mileage, who cares? Cars are my hobby, and I don't mind spending money on something I love.
So yes, get an RX-7. Just be careful.

my 90 hp carburated corolla is a 16 valve twin cam.also, if all you've owned is rotaries, your probably a little bias and don't really have the experience to make a valid opinion....
i think that if you have your mind set on a 7, and you really want it, get it. now on which one to get, look around and see which modle has the most parts in your area b/c you will need money for parts. also i know from experience dont recomend driving the 7 to school b/c some kids might get jealous and key it and smash you tail lights. it happend to my friends camaro and another kids new volvo

I live in NYC, my RX7 comes out at night, every night. I drive other cars during the day to get to work/school and for daily beaters. None of these are my cars but i have driven all of these for an extended period of time.
