Batmobile moving to an Apt in Washington DC, where to go?
So I am on this huge bind. I just got this awesome job in the heart of Washington DC, but trying to find an apartment with a garage where I can work on my car is proving difficult to find. I also do not want to worry about having my air compressor stolen. I think everyone knows where I am going with this. Does anyone with any knowledge of the area have any suggestions? Ideally, if I found a loft with a garage underneath wold be the best bet.
It all depends on the $$$
Unless you have a bunch of money for rent, best bet is to get into a townhouse with a garage, with some roommates that don't have cars. Downtown is really tough to find a private garage for a single bedroom. It is easier to live outside the city and just metro in. The DC DMV sucks anyway.
Side-note for the uninitiated: do NOT park on DC streets without a front plate installed. Whether you are from DC, MD, or VA they will ticket you and it will stick.
Welcome to the district...

hey davin, welcome to the dc area. my recommendation is to find a townhouse or house outside of dc that has a garage. there's TONS of townhouses and homes where you can rent a room for a decent price and workout something with the owner to use the garage and keep your car parked there.
check out craigslist, under shared rooms.

Where you could probably negotiate for them to clear the stuff out of the garage for you.

Garages are TOUGH, especially in the city, but outside it as well. What's worse is, even if you find a place that technically has one, a lot of the homes are OLD, and the "garages" are so small you'd have to climb out the sunroof, or they have dirt floors, or you have to drive through some F'd up alley to get to it. Sorry for the bad news.
I just went through an exhaustive home search last year, so that's how I know. There are lots of high-rise appts. with parking garages, but most strictly forbid you to do any work on your car in them, much less keep an air compressor. You may need to look at a separate, off site garage or 24-hour access storage facility if you want that kind of garage... or maybe get lucky on a rental.
But, welcome to DC! Where you working and what are you doing? I'm right down off K street.

DC itself sucks to live in if you have cars.
1 - they are *constantly* broken into. Even right in front of police stations. If you lock it, they break in. If you leave it unlocked, they break in (yes even though it's not locked).
2 - unless you are making pretty good bank, give up on finding a garage situation in DC where you can work on your car. Even if you ARE making good money, I'd still rather live in a suburb.
3 - roads in dc suck. parking sucks.
My advice would be to live in one of the Maryland suburbs such as Bethesda or Rockville and then use the Metro to get to your DC job. Find a townhouse with a 2 car garage and there ya go.

Any luck in finding a place? I am actually moving and just found a townhouse for rent in fairfax with a garage. The owner is letting me use the garage and the short driveway in front so I can park both my cars and now have a nice little garage to work on the 7! Pretty sweet at a reasonable price.
Keep looking and good luck.

No luck yet. Still looking. And was really sucks, is I have a cat as well. Seems when I do find a place with a garage, they do not allow cats. What a needle in the haystack this is turning out to be!
